Infant feeding

If I think baby is intolerant to formula, what should I do?

Baby is nearly 6 months and up to a few days ago was ebf. I've started moving her onto formula by replacing one feed so she's had a couple of bottles. Her poos since have been quite mucusy and loud and she's developed a small rash on various parts of her body. She's quite prone to rashes so this could be coincidence - especially with heat etc
I'm not sure if I need to worry really. Do I just keep giving her formula and see what happens? I don't know!

Can you talk to your HV? If you're concerned then you may as well get it checked to put your mind at ease. It could just be the change from bf to ff but there's no harm in checking, IMO.

Go to the gp for a diagnosis- keep giving her formula until then and keep a note of symptoms. Once diagnosed, the gp can prescribe formula.

Great link thanks and thanks for the advice. I'll pop to clinic tomorrow to see HV. I just wasn't sure if I should stop giving it to her or not. I really hope she isn't intolerant 😕

Are you still bfing? If so, have you stopped eating dairy?

Yes, baby was ebf until Tuesday when she had a bottle of formula. I've just been eating normally including dairy, she's been fine. My brother and I were allergic to dairy as children as was my niece until she was 3, so it does run in the family. I've put some milk on her skin this pm to see if she had a contact reaction and she didn't. So can't be that causing the rash, or could it?

It could well be, there are different types of allergy. I'm non ige which means I get a delayed reaction. How is she now?

Way more spotty. I went to the GP on Friday and she thinks it's most likely viral or HFM, but that it could also be an intolerance and it was hard to say. So I'm non the wiser really. She has got it on her hands and feet which I think would be unusual for a food reaction, so really hoping its HFM. I'm still giving her the one bottle a day and will see if the rash goes/other symptoms pop up. Really hoping its just a coincidental illness. GP did suggest trying lactose free formula but in the next breath said maybe not. As it tastes rank and baby only just happy with a bottle, I'm not going to try that right away.

Lactose free wouldn't help if she has Cows Milk Protein Allergy at all.

Try wysoy formula it's dairy free; can get it at the supermarket...there is some risk that they can be sensitive to soy too but I think the risk will be low for you seeing as she was fine when bf (my ds reacts if I eat dairy when bf but he is fine on this formula). It doesn't taste rank either though it is a distinctive taste...

This was prescribed by our dietitian BTW when ds was 6 months
