Infant feeding

It hurts it hurts it hurts!

DS just turned one. He's always fed through the night, but recently I have agonising pain in my nipples when he latches on. My best guess is that it's his teeth grazing me (four top, four bottom) but no idea why it's started recently. Half heartedly tried nipple shields, but he is Not A Fan. Any help and advice greatly appreciated!

I don't really have any help to offer, other than I'd say that teeth of and in themselves never made any difference when I fed my DS to the age of two! By the end he had a full set and it wasn't sore.

Does the pain feel like biting? Or could there be something else going on. For example, any chance you have thrush in the nipple?

Hi, my son has just turned 11 months and two weeks ago I had the problem you are describing, like you I thought it was his teeth as he had just got his two top and two bottom front teeth ...but then today I got my first proper period since he was born so I have now decided it must have been because I was ovulating. Especially because the pain has now gone and I know his latch has not improved. I have read that a change in our hormones can cause nipple pain so it makes sense. HTH

Ooh, both helpful answers, thanks. Are there other symptoms for nipple thrush? I'm not experiencing anything else as far as I've noticed. No other signs of impending period and the pain's been ongoing for I guess more than ten days or so, but you never know, I suppose...

It does sound similar to what I felt when I had thrush whilst feeding DS2, I had no other symptoms but a course of cream for my and medicine for baby quickly cleared it up.
