ductal thrush - not sure my GP will be any help

This will be the third week since giving birth that I've been at the doctors with issues with my boobs. (DC3 is only 4wks and 3 days). I was there last week as baby has oral thrush and I've got it in my nipples but since then feeding pain has got worse, real ache in my breast during and after feeding so much so that I'm beginning to hate the prospect of putting baby to the breast. Plus I'm sure it hasn't been helped by the antibiotics I've been on for mastitis - hence the first trip to the GP.

Rang the doctors today and talked to the on call doctor explained my symptoms and that I thought it had gone to my ducts and was told, 'that isn't possible.' Have an appointment this afternoon and am trying to find useful information to take with me to show the doctor that I need more treatment then the topical cream I was given last week as I think they're going to fob me off with 'just keep using the cream and oral gel on the baby'. There is a brief mention on the NHS website about oral treatment but nothing about ductal thrush that I can find.

Any help, advice greatly appreciated.
TIA.

I had ductal thrush a few months ago and it is horrid, so Flowers for you. It's difficult to get diagnosed because there are no external signs and many GPs haven't heard of it. Very real however.

You need to find a sympathetic GP to prescribe a two week course of oral (50 mg/day) Fluconazole, which will hopefully shift it.

How did your appointment go?

You can buy fluconazole at the chemist but obviously need to know it's safe whilst feeding- have a look at Kelly mom or lll for their 'drugs and breastfeeding' information.

over the counter fluconazole is only licensed and sold for genital thrush in single capsules of 150 mg so completely unsuitable for ductal thrush.

Fluconazole isn't safe to take if your baby is under 6 weeks.

And there isn't any evidence that ductal thrush exists, to be honest.

Are there BF groups in your area?

I had duct thrush and took a ten day course of fluconazole plus cream and drops for baby and if cleared up. GP very reluctantly prescribed after recommendation from respected lactation consultant. She gave me some written info to give to gp I think. I can try to find it but not at home until next week and hope you get meds before then!!! My baby was two weeks old but the LC gave me a leaflet explaining that the levels that get into breast milk are safe for babies although you should apparently he more cautious with prem babies. I'm sure you've googled but I'm sure I found stuff previously online to give to GPs re ductal thrush. Have you been to see an LC? They might ask your GP to prescribe. Hope you feel better, the pain is just awful isn't it :( X
