HELP ~ How Do You Keep Breastfeeding A Biter When The Top Teeth Appear??

Quootiepie · 20/12/2006 02:19

Back to BFing and the bugger keeps biting me again... now with top teeth, so even when he feeds (tongue over bottom) he's still getting me. WHen he starts to latch aswell, he gives a little nip, even when he's hungry and it's the start of an actual feed (he only used to bite when he wasn't really hungry) I've just had to give him formula before he rips me to shreds, and he was getting very aggitated with the teething (no EBM stored) and he's very happy and fingers crossed asleep now. What happens now when they have top teeth? Is it possible to keep going? WHen he was biting at his worst, he really did damage and gave me paper cut like cuts on my nipples. If I was to totally express, how can I get that going? WHen I was on my BFing break, I got 6oz a time (all had to be dumped ) but tried to express yesterday and got about 10/15mls. I have a lactina electric breastpump and an avent hand one (which seems to work better) - how often/how long/how much should I be trying to get? How much would he drink?

Many Thanks xXx xXx

No - I gave up when the biting started at 10 months!! Figured I had done my best - If removing lunch from his spitefull little mouth didnt motivate him to stop biting then his urge to bite was greater than his urge to feed!!

Yes, of course you can breastfeed when they have teeth!!

If you search there are lots of threads about this with lots of suggestions.

I screeched like a banshee and whipped the milk away, mine soon got the message and stopped exercising their little teeth.

I do all the stopping the feed etc., but with the top one it hurts even when he feeds normally...

Is he actually biting down or is it just pressure from his teth. The former I'd suggest you remove him and relatch or end the feed. The latter does get better as your tolerance builds and a small shift in position may help .

to get a baby to let go you have to push there face right into your breast so they can't breath through their nose and they let go. Goes against all reasonable instincts I know but it does work. If you do this every time it hurst say no put them down very breifly and then and try again it should get better. I fed Ds and DD with both top and bottom teeth. they just had to learn not to bite

Hi QP,

Good to hear you're back bfing but not good about the biting - ouch! I have never experienced this as stopped at 8 months first time and still no teeth at 9 months this time! However my friends baby got teeth at 4 months and she used nipple shields for a couple months more. Have you tried them?

On the ebm front DD2 only takes around 4 or 5 oz all day when she is away from me and when I had a night away she only had another 9oz overnight. It is hard to judge though as obviously they get more when bfing. I would say it would be better to try with nipple shields before going down the 100% expressing route.

Good luck and glad to see all these happy emoticons.

I can get him off once he bites ~ the way you say its just he does it so often. Just given him a feed now, and he bit again... have a feeling I should just get used to it. Fingers crossed he'll not want much, if any breastfeeding beyond 12 months... 3 months left!

4/5oz? All day? You mean each feed all day, or totally all day? I expressed 6 oz in one session (but had to dump) the other day so if thats the case, that would be brilliant! I was thinking 8oz a feed, about 8 times a day!

LOL QP he would pop!!!
Yep that is the total amount all day but she does get a good feed in the evening and then of course is still a night snacker. However there are a good few MN babies going all day without ebm who are only a bit older than ours. You could use the pint rule I guess or, as you are doing BLW (I think??) just give him say 4 bottles a day and make sure that he doesn't drain them IYSWIM?

What about trying the shields?

Hes been biting again, I think enough is enough and im going to express feed. Had to give formula again because no EBM stored, and hes taken 10oz Thats double your daily amount. I wonder if formula is different somehow in that respect?

Ill try them. I have BIG flat nipples though, I have to try and shove them in... Does it hurt when they bite with sheilds? He bites the bottle teat... looks sore!

My nips are flat but small and when I used them for thrush DD2 just sort of hoovered themin and they worked fine! My friend did find that they worked for biting.

Keep us updated!
