Infant feeding

5 month old refusing bottle

I wonder if anyone has any advice.

My 5 month old DS is BF but since he was 6 weeks old we have given him a bottle of formula at bedtime. This has been going well and he would take it from me or my DH.

Fast forward to 4.5 months and he suddenly started refusing the bottle by jamming his mouth shut and if we do manage to get the teat in he spits it out with a dramatic "Pah".

I have tried giving it to him at other times of the day too but the result is the same - he gets extremely angry.

Why the change?

Should I try different bottles? Teats? Brand of formula? (we have been using Hipp).

It's so frustrating as I want to give up BF in the new year but clearly it's not going to work Confused

Maybe try a Tommee tippee first sips cup? My ebf ds took to those much easier than a bottle.

Thanks badger

I bought a tommee tippee first sips cup on Thursday and have offered it at every feed but he refuses it too. Loves playing with it though Hmm

I am going out tonight for a Christmas meal but have to leave a bit late so I can feed him before I go and then come home early Sad

Any other ideas?

So, no night out for me. DS still wailing, not sure what he wants but I can't go out because he won't feed other than on the boob.

Totally fed up. He ruins everything Sad

I went for an hour before being called back by my husband.

Barely worth it and made me feel even more miserable.

Last Christmas I was just pregnant and exhausted. This year I am a prisoner.

Here's to next year Xmas Angry

Your dh needs to tough it out a bit more.

I agree your DH should have gone out in the car or sucked it up..it wouldn't have hurt ds to wait for a feed

My first refused a bottle after 4 months and never took one again. I bought every one going including medela and breastflow. Spent a fortune.

Try a doidy cup, my DD will only drink out of these, ans they are the cupd reccomended by my HV. They are really reasonable on Amazon Smile

riding me too! I became obsessed with buying every bottle on the market in the vain hope of finding one that dd would take... Never did... She's now 28 months and still has booby 😌 the first drinking vessel she took to was a Tommy tippee beaker...

I would describe DD as being EBF however 1-2 of these are by bottle using expressed breast milk.

It's a long story but we had some difficulty establishing breast feeding so she used expressed breast milk in a bottle before we breast fed.

I found mimijumi bottles brilliant because they look like a breast and have a breast like texture so babies find them more acceptable. I am certain they are the reason I have been able to establish breastfeeding with my daughter. She will happily have either boob or bottle depending on what is offered.

Perhaps the mimijumi bottles are worth a try

Xx
