Pain in one side cannot be thrush. And thrush doesn't generally cause bleeding.If it hurts during the feed, it's possible something may be up with his latch?
I'm glad to hear you're not in pain any more and you've found a fix that sorts it out for you. Expressing a bit, for comfort, can help with the engorgement.
