Infant feeding

baby loosing latch every other suck

I wonder if anyone has any experience of this and any advice please.
DS is 7weeks old, weights 10lb 2oz. This started last night, when feeding on my right side he is loosing latch every other suck, there is an audible click as he comes of and then has to get himself latched back on before starting to suck properly to feed and after 1 or 2 sucks he looses latch again. I rugby ball feed on the right side mainly as that nipple was damaged early on and it was the only way to feed without causing more damage. That side has a much faster and easier let down, when he drops off I end up with a dribble of milk running out constantly.
He has had a couple of bottles of EBM/formula over the last couple of days as he is on medication for being aneamic.
Thank you in advance
Harriet

Not an experrt here by any means, but do you think he is having a bit of nipple confusion? If it continues, you might consider trying a nipple shield.

I did wonder if it was nipple confusion, can that happen just on one side I wonder?

I wondered about that. You said there had always been issues with that side. I have the same problem with my right side. Ds2 is 2 1/2 weeks old and it seems like a fight half the time to get him to latch on. We also use the football hold on that side. At first he would only latch on with the shield. Now, sometimes he prefers it and sometimes not. It's a challenge...

At least the other side is straightforward. With ds1 we had these issues with both sides and I eventually gave up and exclusively expressed for 10 months. I am highly motivated to make it work this time, as had no idea how awful expressing would be as a full time thing the first go around.

lol BF can certainly be a challange. Well done for getting to 2 1/2 weeks, I think it helps to be determined to help you get through some of the sticky patches.

Well I just expressed 4oz off the right side and I am going to try and get him to latch on while it's not full and see what happens if he keeps his latch then it will at least give me a clue I think. But will have no idea how to solve it full time though.

Any other experiences and suggestions gratefully received.

Just wanted to update this in case anyone else does a search for this information.

DS is now 10 weeks and this has improved as he has got bigger and hungrier although he does still let go when let down happens as it's too fast for him still, but he's not clicking any more. I have also expressed quite a bit off the side he struggled with and used the other side more as he has had a nasty cold and been struggling breathing during feeding which has worked fine, although expressing at 3am is a bit of a pain lol.
