Infant feeding

Possible egg sensitivity and breastfeeding

We've just started weaning my 6m old. The first two times he tried egg, he was fine. The third time he ate quite a lot of egg and was violently sick for the rest of that afternoon. No fever, but was really sad and tired. However this was combined with him having a bottle of formula which is unusual for him as he is otherwise ebf. Health visitor suggested we try egg again and monitor him.

Today he had the tiniest tiniest bit of egg (not in the mood for food today!) and was again violently sick. This time, just sick once and he seemed fine afterwards.

He's really not a sicky baby at all so there's definitely something going on. There's no other symptoms other than the sickness. I can't get a gp appointment til next Thursday.

Obviously no eggs on his little menu for now, as I am EBF should I cut eggs from my diet too? He's always been a fussy baby and now I'm really freaking out that it's been eggs all along... Confused

Any thoughts or experience of this much appreciated... Had a Google and can't find anything helpful!

I would go and see your GP. My friend's son is allergic to eggs and they got tested and see a dietitian. Eggs are in so much so worth seeing someone.

Ds1 had this. IIRC they said it was something to do with proteins in the egg. Although he was fine with things with egg as the ingredients. He just couldn't tolerate egg on its own. I breastfed and consumed eggs and he was fine. Think I reintroduced eggs around 2 years (maybe later) and he had outgrown the sensitivity.

Off to see the GP but can't get an appointment until next week... I'll cut back on eggs myself until we know for sure but hopefully I can still eat them and BF if he's intolerant.

Weird, if he is intolerant, that he was fine the first two times eating egg though right?

With intolerances the more you eat the worse it gets

My daughter was sick after egg at 6-7 months. She was fine with it as an ingredient (in cakes and pancakes etc). I avoided giving her egg for a while and at 21 months she's had with no problems. So I wouldn't jump to conclusions, might just be something some babies find hard to digest. Obviously if there are any other symptoms you could take it more seriously!
