Is there a wrong way to baby led wean? If so can I have some examples, has anyone ever done it wrong?

It depends on what you consider baby led weaning to be. To me, it's just giving baby solid foods they eat with their fingers when they're ready for food.

In this way, it's hard to get it wrong. Is there something you're concerned about specifically op?

I mean Gill Rapley baby led weaning, so yes giving them proper food to eat.

The only thing you could do 'wrong' is feed too much salt or the foods that are not recommended under 1yr. Otherwise the principle is to just feed the baby what you're eating.

The key to success is to be aware of what the baby can actually get into their mouth. A 6mo won't manage peas for example, but could pick up and gum a well-cooked carrot stick.

What about in regards to milk? I'm breastfeeding. I have this constant worry that baby isn't getting enough/too much.

I'm assuming if you try to limit milk and encourage more food it would lead to slow gains/loss and possibly and unsettled baby. But too much? Would it just show in gains? How would you know it was a food/milk issue. God, I don't think I have worried as much. With my DS, he was always just a big baby so I never had these worries.

The guidance is to offer the baby milk as normal, and allow them to supplement with the BLW foods. How old is your baby? Why are you concerned?

You don't limit milk, you offer food in addition to it whether blw or otherwise

To start with, it's just about tastes and textures. Don't worry about volume.

The easiest way I found was just to offer DD a little bit of anything suitable that I was having. We shared bananas, I cut the veg for dinner with a crinkle cut chipper and handed her some. No stress, no pressure, just share your food.

Keep up the milk. Offer as usual and she'll take less over time as she ups her solids.

Yeah the only wrong would be salt or whole nuts etc.

In terms of how much, it varies wildly. DD has just started reliable meals at 10 months, but friends have had babies who eat 3 times a day/steady amount from 7.
As milk has not been cut back and I give haliborange drops, she's fine until 1 just learning to eat.

Though my tip would be ... a portion of food that makes you poo every day! Berries, plums, cabbage, dry fruit, beans etc.
And even with that dd only poos every few days (3 times in an hour when you're out, in my experience. .. I've paid to visit soft play change areas, museum change areas ...).

My dd1 was small and a slow grower so I understand your concerns.

As others have said offer milk as usual and see how she does with food. She may naturally and gradually up her food and reduce her milk. Don't forget that strict BLW (without spoon-feeding) can take longer than the puree route as it requires more dexterity.

I ended up having to give breakfast before morning milk (esp if she'd had a night feed) and drop some milk feeds at around 10mo so that she would eat any food at all - but I don't think we're the norm in any repect :-)

Good luck. Go with what your baby wants and don't be overly influenced by HV, books, peers, dc1, or well-meaning strangers on the internet ;-)
