9wk old constipated - advice please

My 9wk old DD seems to be constipated. She is combination fed (60% breastmilk, 40% formula) all of which is via a bottle (I express). For the last 4-5 wks she's had a poo at least once but usually two or three times a day. Now she hasn't had a poo for 40hrs and seems really uncomfortable and in a lot of pain.

I've called the Dr but they can't see her unless it's an emergency...

So what tips do you have? She's off her milk quite a bit too. She's only taken half of two feeds given so far today (next due soon). She just seems so unhappy when awake. I'm doing the leg cyvling and tummy massage but it's not solved anything yet unfortunately.

Should I try water? Juice? Or go to the chemist?

I was recommended (at 6 weeks) 10-20ml of cool boiled water. Then wait 24hours and if they haven't pood to give it again. After 3-4 days though I would probably see a Dr. Have you tried calling your HV to see what they advise?

Tried HV but no answer so left a message. Just tried the boiled water and she had about three sips and then rejected it but perhaps that will help, I'll try again with that shortly

My DD had this around the same age - she didn't poo for a week. In the end we took her to A&E (just before Christmas so no GP appointments - also, major PFB!) and they gave her a glycerin suppository which did the trick (and how!). I believe you can get these over the counter from pharmacists so might be worth popping into your chemist and asking them?

At this stage I would say water then as PP say, go to the GP. Some people use brown sugar in water but imo she's too young for that.
My dd was ebf but at about 8 weeks her poo changed frequency. At first she was windy bit after a week it settle down to a poo every 3 days with no discomfort. Which was kind of nice! Grin

I had one like this. Another tip the health visitor gave me was using a warm wet flannel as a compress for their botty and 'soaping'. Basically using Vaseline (or soap) to help the passage of the poo out when they're straining.

Fern we were told similar with olive oil (rub some onto the bum hole).

Thanks for these tips! It seems the boiled water did the trick as she seems back to normal today so perhaps she's just getting Into a new pattern...
