My sil has an underactive thyroid & bf both her los for 12m. Maybe it's just the shock of/stress caused by the news. Maybe you just haven't fed your lo or yourelf as often as usual due to all your visits to the hospital/doctor. How long has your supply been reduced for? How old is your lo? The best way to get your supply to come back is to carry on offering the breast. Hope everything will return to normal for you very soon

Thankyou! My dd is 6 months old and I have considered all the things you have suggested. I have just checked out some thyroid websites and apparently is a a common side effect. I wll continue offering the breast but I can't see how I can avoid supplementing with formula.

hi ellanevemum, must be quite a shock to suddenly lose your supply like that. all the advice i can give is to ask your gp to prescribe thyroxin asap. it is def. true that your supply could be affected by your thyroid function in fact, i have low thyroid function myself (and bf my ds2, who's now almost 11 months old) and am on alternate doses of 75mcg and 100mcg (because my ideal dose is in between), and can really notice my 75mcg days, as my supply on those days is a lot less than on the 100mcg days. in the meantime you could try "diy" tricks to boost your supply. i find having a bowl of porridge for breakfst helps, also, make sure to keep up your fluids and drink enough. ppoor you, i hope everything sorts itself soon!

Thanks honeybunny. I have been genuinely gutted. Porridge with banana is my favourite breakfast! I realise that medication is probably inevitable but my doctors appointment isn't til monday! I am determined to keep my milk supply up as best I can til then. thanks again.
