Infant feeding

Am I feeding him enough

I have a 6wkand 4 day old who is being ebf. After a rocky start of being born at 37 weeks via emcs ,very sleepy and jaundiced , I was told to supplement with formula , as, even though he regained his birth weight, he wasn't gaining at the rate he should. I held off the formula and upped the frequency of feeding ( every 3 hours) and he had a great gain of 400g in one week.
He has not been weighed since, but is clearly growing , has lots of wet and dirty nappies throughout the day, and has generally become more alert during his waking hours. I want to return to demand feeding, as I feel he will let me know if he is hungry at this stage ( in the past he did not) . He has generally fed between 1.5 and 3 hours for the past week, however we are now creeping up to longer gaps between feeds again ... Like 4 or 4.5 hours. I find myself sitting and watching him waiting for him to wake up on his own! How long should be be going between feeds at this age? I'm finding this nerve wracking as I don't want him to get dehydrated! Tia!

//www.kellymom.com is an amazing website if you have time for some reading

It sounds like you're doing fine. It might be worth finding your nearest breastfeeding support group, if you're in the UK they're often at Childrens Centres. Call the midwife and they should tell you
