Infant feeding

His latch is pants!

My 8 week old(10 week prem) has finally started to get the hang if breadtfeeding! My hard work and sheer dedication has finally paid off, even after a 2 week hospital stay with severe bronchiolitis!
Aaanyway, he latches on most if the time, but jeeeez it hurts! Feels like needles being pushed into my nipple with every suck! Basically, I think he hadn't got enough boob in his mouth. Which makes sense as he's so tiny and there's quite a lot of boob!
How do I get him to open his mouth wider??
Also, at some feeds, hi just rubs his mouth side side to side over my nipple in a rooting frenzy, but can't seem to latch on.
Frustrated!

Loveallmyboys, is it possible for you to call a helpline or go to a group? I can talk you through the things that can help with latch, on here, but it's easier on the phone really.

What sort of position are you using? What sort of help/tips have you had with latch?

One thing I realised when dd was tiny was the random head shaking could be sor ted if I dried my nipple with paper towel. She couldn't latch if it had her spit on it weirdly!
Worth a try?

Google the flipple technique, I found that helped us. Although it wasn't until dd reached 12-13 weeks that she really had a great latch, her mouth just needed to grow a bit I think! I also agree with squizita that keeping things dry seemed to help.

My baby shakes his head when he is hungry but either too full of cold to latch on and breath or when he is hungry but also full of wind. Hth

Thanks ladies.
I googled that flipple thing and looking at the vids, I don't think my boobs are wobbly enough to be flippled?! I've decided to see this as a good thing... I had a quick go but DS looked at me as if to say 'wtf just happened then mum?!'
We've checked for tongue tie. No issues as far as we know.
I'm going to TRY and make it to a bf cult meeting this morning... But getting ready for doing the school run with a toddler and a baby in tow is going to be a challenge!
