gaining too much? pediatrician advice...

DS was 3.74kg at birth and was just weighed at 6.99kg at 15 weeks exactly.

he was 59cm at birth, so long boy, and is 62 cm today.

pediatrician at hospital suggested he was gaining too much too fast and that I should feed him less often.

this doesn't sound right to me. DS is ebf and generally feeds every 2.5-3 hours during the day and only one middle of the night feed usually. number of feeds in a 24 hour period is usually 7ish. don't see how I can feed him less as he never even wants more than one boob per feed.

please tell me this is ridiculous and to ignore. Sad Shock

sorry, 63cm today. weight seems to be hovering around the 75th percentile from birth so I don't know what he's on about.

Hes dropped in height percentile from off basically 100th to now 75th, but neither of us are tall, completely average heights.

If your baby is ebf, then they don't over feed, they just take what they need.

Very strange suggestion from the paediatrician especially as he seems to be following the line on the chart.

How exactly do they think you are going to feed him less?

As long as they are being fed directly (not expressed milk), breastfed babies can't overeat, as crikeybadger says.

Is he under the care of a paediatrician for a specific reason?

He is fed directly. we were referred to the Dr for an issue I wanted looked at that doesn't concern his feeding.

Could it be a casual observation, not meant to be taken too seriously, from someone who really doesnt understand i) breastfeeding and ii) the sensitivity all mothers have to remarks about their babies' health and feeding?

My DD was born on the 50th percentile, ebf and within three months she was well above the top curve for weight. My GP drove me crazy about her weight. She kept telling me DD was too big but didn't think we should investigate a medical cause and didn't have anything to suggest. I changed doctors to a paediatrician who was happy with her weight gain. From around 18mo the rate of her weight gain has been dropping so she's at 60% now! but he height which increased much more gradually is at 97th percentile. I think the weight gain was fueling the massive height increase.

In short, don't worry, ebf babies know what they need.
