Infant feeding

How long would it take for a 12 month old to forget about the breast?

I'm planning to wean DD off the breast soon, and she's going to spend a few days with her dad so that she gets used to it.

How long do you think it'd take a 12 month old to forget about the breast?

Might be very distressing for her. I have in my mind it might be a few days but I don't really know

Have you already cut feeds down? And think about how to manage your milk production while you are away.

I have started cutting down feeds, but she sees me and remembers. She has a lot less milk when DH is around to distract her.

I think she will be fine with him as they'll be going on holiday together with other family, and she loves spending time with them and being the centre of attention Smile

It took my 13 month old less than a week - 4 days maybe. She was fine. I was very offended and sad! Be prepared for the hormonal crash and stock up on cabbage leaves.

I think it depends how gradually you wean. I cut down to just a morning and night feed (occasionally missing one here and there). I also gave her a bottle before BFing so it wasn't the focus. She didn't even argue or look for it after I stopped but it was very gradual. I also had no issues with engorgement afterwards.

I stopped offering at 13months and dd never asked. She seemed to completely forget she had ever done it after a week or so.

Sporty more detail - cut down to just a morning feed first though then just swapped to sippy cup of milk. She would never take a bottle anyway.

Thanks everyone!

Greenstone, did you just go cold turkey? That's what I plan to do as it won't work any other way with DD

My toddler was weaned at about that age, 8 months later she still sticks her hand down my top for comfort/asks for beebees/tries to latch on in the bath.

She was joyously pulling my top down in public shouting for beebees and trying to suck my neck just this morning.

IdaClair, oh no, this is exactly what I worry about! She has already started doing that in public when she wants milk and I'm just hoping she will forget but I really doubt it ...

Art - well, we were down to about 2 feeds a day, so I cut it to the morning feed and then nothing, and she had a bottle before bed that night (she had no problem with bottles).

The first night it was perfect, she slept fine. The second night it went to shit and she cried and I cried and I was engorged and a mess. I ended up giving her a tiny little feed and oh the relieeeef. She went to sleep fine after that. The third day and fourth day I just didn't really sit down with her so she didn't get a chance to go looking for it, and then she really just seemed to get over it. Like I said, I was a bit offended and sad!

She sometimes does still stick her hands down my top at 2, but my friend's son who was ff from birth also sticks his hand down his mother's top the whole time - I think it's a toddler comfort thing!
