How long to improve after tongue tie snip?

Hi
My son had a posterior tongue tie snipped on Thursday, he was then only 8 days old. Unfortunately there hasn't been much improvement in feeding yet.

I can still feel the gums chomping and my nipples are still sore. He has better tongue function and we have been encouraging him to move it around, stick it out etc etc but the latch is still rubbish and even when it starts well he either gags because the milk comes to fast or he just slips into a nipple chomp which I quickly put an end to!

Does anyone have any experience of how long it can take for the baby to learn to use the tongue properly or any tricks to speed up the process?

Also, I have noticed he has an upper lip tie - the top gum bites too but I am uncertain whether the two are linked or if it's just a rubbish latch. Seeing the midwife Monday but looking for some help/hope to get through the next two days of toe curling pain.

Cheers

It can take them a week or so to get used to therenew tongue. But if there is no improvement take your DS to be checked again out first TT cut was not deep enough so tongue function was still restricted.

Mine has lip tie too and had TT cut but it hasn't improved after 2.5 weeks. My LC said it might take a week so hopefully yours will get better. No hope for mine I think.

About 10 days to think 'this isn't as toe-curlingly horrific as it used to be', 3 weeks to pain-free feeding and 4 to efficient draining. Dd also had posterior TT. Lip tie is still there, no effect on feeding though suspect it is severe enough that it might have an impact on tooth development in the future. Her tongue mobility is now excellent though!

Re the lip tie...my son has it too, as do I and it has caused a gap between our fron teeth.

Mine had hers done a lot later than you (15 weeks). A week on and there have been some good feeds, but I still have mostly bad ones. The excessive spit up has reduced dramatically, and she's sleeping better (getting fuller in the evening s). Laych is still mostly small, but she's taking in less air, we are having a lot less trouble with wind. My supply is settling down, it was very high because she spat up so much and so often.

I was never in pain, but have excessively long and frequent feeds, due to poor sucking action and not draining, and constantly emptying her stomach.

Thanks for the responses - just what I needed to hear to persevere. I had naively thought one snip and all would be well!

Things are slowly improving….toes still curl on the latch but then the pain does ease (when it didn't before).
