Bicarbonate of soda and bf

Hi all,

I am ebfing my five-week-old and think I may be getting a uti. I'd like to head it off at the pass, so to speak, and was thinking of taking bicarbonate of soda in water. Stupidly googled it and now massively confused as to whether its safe but its too late in the day to get medical advice. Has anyone out there had advice on this?

Check out the breastfeeding network's pages, Alice and the breastfeeding and medication facebook page.

I can't see what harm it would do - bicarb is classed as a foodstuff, and I also can't see that it could possibly get into the milk.

But I am not a doctor or pharmacist :)

I can't imagine a small amount of bicarb in water would cause much of an issue. Your body should filter it out, especially as you'll be drinking plenty of water with a UTI.
