Infant feeding

Please help - let down reflex gone

Hi, I've always been able to feel my letdown reflex strongly, until yesterday. I've not felt it at all and I'm worried its because I'm dehydrated in the hot weather so not producing enough milk. It doesn't help that because it's hot I don't really feel like eating.

Also DS' wee is a bit more yellow than usual...

Any advice massively appreciated.

How old is your DS? I think the sensation of letdown disappears after a while for some people (did for me after the first few weeks).

Everything I've read indicates how much you eat has no bearing on your milk production and that you would have to be actually malnourished for your milk to decrease because of how little you ate so I wouldn't worry about that. (Do however make sure you eat well for you!)

I would just keep offering your DS lots and lots of feeds and drink lots of fluids yourself in this hot weather. Obviously contact an HCP if you are worried something's not right/he's dehydrated.

Hi, thanks for replying - he's almost 7 months. I appreciate it's unusual to get a strong letdown sensation this late on, I think it's because I had quite a plentiful supply. I feel like our feeds are all over the place at the moment - for months we've had a pretty clear feeding pattern but it's all gone out of the window and I've really lost my confidence.

I know it sounds weird but I think psychologically something has changed, having passed the magic 6 month mark.

It sounds stressful. Have you started weaning? Do you think it could be connected to that? Am no expert but bumping this for you in the hope someone else comes along.

Don't think it's weird at all by the way. I think b-feeding is definitely a bit psychological!
