2 month old thrashing around during feeds

She's a whirling derbish! DD is exclusively breastfed. She is very windy but I wind her all the time and she brings up her burps, as well as vomit. I could spend 2 hours holding her and she would be intermittently burping the whole time even waking up and burping then back off to sleep. We have tried infacol, gripe water, she is having gaviscon, I have tried stopping that, she brings up her gaviscon anyway! She will start squirming from the moment she latches on. My latch is fine, I have tried feeding her more upright - sometime she does burp whilst still latched. It makes no difference if I have full boobs in the morning or not much in the evening. She farts for England so she has obviously still got wind there - but how long can I spend winding her? There would be no time for feeding due to the winding! She squeals and screams when I try to wind her either because she is in pain or because I have taken her off the breast to get the wind up before it descends! Any ideas? I have bought some dentinox to try but I'm pretty sure it's a similar medicine to infacol (which seemed to make her vomit even more). She has also dropped a centile in weight. If anyone can give me any more suggestions I would be so grateful. I have a 2.5 year old DS to look after as well.

When she squirms does she seem to be in pain? Crying or shrieking. Does she come off the breast often and arch her back while crying? What does she do with her legs during episodes? How is her weight gain?

Sorry, you answered that last one! I'm thinking reflux. Is she very sicky, or virtually nothing?

Has your health visitor watched her feed. does she appear to have pain when she is burping and not want to be fed at times. I would ask for a paediatrician to have a look at her.

She's not screaming at the breast usually until she gets frustrated after bobbing on and off or when I pick her up to wind. She does throw herself back screaming when I sit her up to wind. She was loosely diagnosed with reflux and prescribed gaviscon. DS had omeprazole when he was her age until 7 months. I have been backwards and forwards to the GP but each time been fobbed off with "it's normal for babies to be sick" or "keep going with the gaviscon". She was gaining weight nicely but now dropping a centile. In a way I am a little bit pleased that I now have some ammunition to get a referral to paeds. She does appear to be in pain and then I try and feed her after being sick or after a burp and it's like she doesn't want it but REALLY does like she's ravenous IYSWIM. She will shove her fist in her mouth which we've now realised is a sign that she's got wind or pain but I really struggle with knowing what to do when she's like this - especially in the evenings.

Sounds like a baby I have seen before who needed to a peadiatrican. I think your instinct is probably right. Doesn't sound like simple colic or mild reflux to me. Sounds like she is miserable. The very best of luck to you.

DD was a lot like this, including the squirming, bobbing on and off and the constant wind at both ends, plus mild reflux symptoms.

turned out she had posterior tongue tie and so couldn't get a proper latch and was swallowing so much air. all improved massively once we finally got it snipped.

may not be your problem but definitely worth checking out (get a qualified bf counsellor to take a look, not just HV)

Sounds strongly like reflux linked to an intolerance to something in your diet... The most common of which is cows milk protein. The behaviour is because they want to feed but it causes them discomfort and they seem to be able to smell/taste the offending food in the milk so get even more upset. Dd has cmpi and also had tt and a lip tie. Shes still on 20mg omeprazole at 21months but it was only eliminating dairy and soya from both our diets that gave us our lives back.

She can stick out her tongue quite far so I don't think it's a tongue-tie. It feels comfortable to feed her too and she doesn't take long to feed. I think I will try for a GP appointment tomorrow and try for a referral, and if we get to see a paeds consultant they may be able to help work out the problems! Thanks for all your advice.

I have the exact same problem with my 4 month old daughter. Today she flatly refused the breast many times, always pulling off and going on, pulling off and going on, Only time she feeds well at times is at night when she is half asleep. I am always winding her and can bring up burps an hour after her feed. Some days are better than others. She doesnt scream but yes gets annoyed at being burped when she wanst the breast. Lath seems fine and i dont think shes tongue tied either. Would loev to know how you get on at docs as I dont feel i'm taken seriously!
