Bf, medical management of miscarriage and painkillers.

Sorry for the sad subject in this topic but I need some advice.

I have just had a scan at 11 weeks and there is no heartbeat. I've opted for medical management but the hospital are having some trouble giving me details about the effect of this on breastfeeding my 18mo ds. They say the last time the question came up was a year ago and they don't sounds particularly convinced by their own advice on the matter.

He only feeds 2-4 times a day but it has been more lately due to teething. He's fine with cow's milk and if he has to just have that for a couple of days, it's not the end of the world but I'd prefer to return to bf asap.

So, what painkillers can I take with bf? I know I can have paracetamol but I have a feeling that won't cut it. I can't take anything aspirin based anyway but would like to be dosed up to the gills for the actual main event.

I have just checked the BNF for you, the people at the hospital should have done that for you, considering there will be copies all over the place that they regularly use.

Page You shouldn't have to find it yourself, you're going through a difficult time and that is understandable.

However, it would take 2 minutes for the HCPs to find this stuff out and I am that they have left you not knowing.

I'd agree codiene or dihydrocodiene. I was taking codiene in pregnancy for chronic pain and was told by a consultant categorically it was safe in pregnancy. Do take care not get constipated though.

Will you have to miscarry at home after the medicine has been administered or will you be in the hospital? I had medical management, I stayed in the hospital for the "process" and I found gas and air to be useful. Obviously this doesn't stay in your system so won't have an effect on your milk.

Thank you all so much. I've had the first pill now and will be going back on Sat for the second stage. I'll stay in for approx 6-8 hours and that should be the majority of it, if all goes well.

It's such a crap thing but the hospital staff are amazing, which has helped a lot.

I have to walk through the children's hospital to get to the clinic. Kind of puts it into perspective. I'd far far rather be going through what I am than taking my child there.
