Infant feeding

HV one year check

DH had DS yesterday when the hv came, and he was asked about milk. The hv told him that 3-4 bfs a day was a lot of milk for a one year old. Is she right? Ds has always fed a lot, but is thriving and loves his food.

If she's not right, should I complain about poor bf advice? I feel more uncomfortable because she advised dh on this as well (who to be fair has an attitude that she doesn't know what she's talking about)

I don't know, but DS at 1 was having at least that morning, nap, bedtime, and a couple during the night, maybe another one during the day if he felt like it and eating 3 meals and snacks.

I can't imagine why it would matter really - if he wasn't drinking BM he'd be drinking something else, BM is healthier than many alternatives.

If she really and truly said this, and meant it critically, then she is plain wrong.

She could be making the elementary (and for an HCP, inexcusable) mistake of thinking that breastfeeding is the same as formula feeding, and assuming your baby is the same as one having (say) 4 x 150 mls of formula or cows milk in a day.

That might be a lot for a one year old - actually it's not a huge amount.

Perhaps the next step is to call her, ask her what she said, say it's made you confused, and that your information is that it is fine to continue breastfeeding as much as a toddler wants, alongside a growing repertoire of other foods - and you'd like her to send you some information if she thinks this is somehow not good for your baby. If you are not happy with what she says, then yes, take it further.

OTOH maybe she was pleased he is getting a good amount of lovely breastmilk, and more than most babies of his age :)

Thanks. I'll give her a ring next week after all my exams are over. Suspect I'll end up talking to another member of the HV team, likely to give entirely different advice Hmm
