I am exclusively bfing and after lots of problems at the beginning things have been going well for a few weeks but this afternoon and evening he has completely refused me, screaming hysterically and pummelling me with his little fists. I need to feed him but have no idea how I can get him to latch on when he is so distressed. As soon as DH takes him he is calm. HELP!!!

Hope your ok OP, i have a few suggestions all may possibly be wrong. And if your at all seriously worried please get professional help.

Has he got thrush? It looks like a white coating in his mouth. It hurts them and stops them from feeding. He will feed but it will be uncomfortable for him so he'll stop and start alot.

Or have you tried giving him some EBM? Or better yet letting your DP do it, if your getting stressed about him not feeding sometimes the baby can pick it up?

Is he still having wet and dirty nappies? I think they say not to worry unless the baby hasn't had a wet nappy for over 12 hours, or is showing signs of dehydration.

Also It could be the heat today, it might make him feel like not doing much and you may find he has a huge cluster feed later.

Thanks Halestone. He has just fed - it took ages to get him on and I had to keep passing him to DH to calm him down between attempts. I think it might be the weather as you suggest although I would have thought it would make him thirsty so he would want to feed! I don't want to express as I don't want him getting nipple confusion (he has had ebm by bottle a few times and he always struggles afterwards to latch on (he had posterior tongue tie and even though it was snipped on day 3 we still have some occasional latch issues.
He has only done one poo today and usually does loads so I wonder if maybe he is just building up for a big one and is a bit uncomfortable.

Could be, the only thing i find out whilst i was BF was that whenever you think you've cracked it, something new appears. Good luck with the pooplosion haha Grin

Hi, my EBF 8 week little lady started teething last week and refused to eat. My health visitor told me to rub her gums with my finger for a bit before i start feeding coz thesev are sore and uncomparable and hurt them while feeding.Rubbing gums makes them feel better. It might be something else but you could give it a go. Good luck

Posterior tongue ties are notorious for growing back - what your lo is doing is exactly what my dd did before her tt was snipped. Just a thought, the tt might not present in exactly the same way second time around.

Thanks so much everyone. I have got a nasty cold so wonder if DS is also feeling under the weather. He has fed ok today (not great though, but less hysterics) but he has been making clicky noises which suggests that his latch isn't perfect. I am now worried his tongue tie has grown back - I will try to inspect. He had it done nearly 10 weeks ago though so wouldn't it have grown back ages ago if it was going to? I wish I could mind-read DS so I could resolve whatever is bothering him!
