Snipped TT and wound massage advice

Hi,

Ds has had a TT snipped and we were told to massage the wound to prevent it reattaching. I'm finding it a bit distressing to do, and ds obviously hates it.

Has anyone got any advice?

There are differing schools of thought on if it makes a difference on reattachment depending on who your surgeon is.

First time I didn't massage and it reattached. Second time I woke her religiously every three hours to feed and massage even though she was sleeping through and it reattached. 3rd time I did no massage and let her sleep through it did not reattach.

When my dd had hers snipped at 4 weeks we weren't told to massage it or get her to move her tongue around and it never reattached. It was only afterwards when it was too late that I read about other people doing it.

I think if I was to do it again I might try and encourage tongue movement just in case it made a difference as the thought of it re-attaching and going through the bf pain again is too much to bear.

DTS was snipped at 3 weeks. We were advised to breastfeed every 2 hours round the clock for a week which we did. We were told that this strategy was evidenced/supported etc for preventing reattachment.

We were also shown how to massage the wound and advised to do this once and ideally twice a day. We were told that there was some evidence to suggest this prevented reattachment but this was still a matter for debate sort-of-thing. We massaged once a day in various ways depending on the state of healing and as advised ( can remember how long but at least a few weeks). We did miss the odd day though.

Thank you for your replies, we're feeding every two to three hours and massaging twice a day (I don't think I can do three, I feel awful just doing two).

I didn't realise this was advised but am glad I've read your post - I'm taking DD (9 weeks) to get her tongue tie cut on Wednesday. DS had his done at about the same age and we were never told to massage, just to keep sticking our tongues out at him so that he would copy us! It didn't reattach.

Hope everything's going ok.

I have never heard of massaging the wound! Dd is now 3 and had her tongue tie snipped at 4 weeks and we were never given this advice, is it new?
