Infant feeding

Hungrier baby milk v normal formula

Posting for a friend

Her little girl is 14 weeks old and currently on 4/5oz every 3/4 hours, she is wondering whether to move her baby onto the hungrier baby formula so she gets more from the milk.

Is it worth it??
She is using cow and gate formula

Thanks

If the baby seems to want more milk, she may be entering a growth spurt: add a bit more milk to each feed or offer a feed more often. Every 4 hours certainly seems quite far apart for this age (though my 3 were all bf so much more frequent feeders).

That seems like a normal amount of formula to me.

Hungry baby milk is the same as normal infant formula, except the protein component in it is not as modified, so it takes longer to digest. It's not more nutritious and usual advice is to stay with normal infant formula if the baby is doing ok on it....this baby is sounds as if she is feeding normally. How often does she expect her to feed?

For a useful guide on the difference between hungry baby formula and normal infant formula, google "The health professional?s guide to: ?A guide to infant formula for parents who are bottle feeding?

I'm confused. The baby doesn't sound particularly hungry, why would you give "hungry baby milk"??

DS was drinking 10oz bottles every 3/4hrs at 14wks hence we tried HBM...

DD was only drinking 6oz every 4hrs ish at 14wks, is now 18wks and usually has 7oz so we are sticking with "normal" formula. 4oz doesn't sound like very much at all!!!

I am genuinely puzzled!

Hang on I think I've just clicked, are you saying she isn't drinking much so is wondering if she can get more "nutrition" from hungry milk?

If so, the answer is no. It isn't any more nutritious. The only difference is it is potato based which is harder for babies' digestive systems to break down. Hence the idea they should be able to go longer between feeds.

I don't like it personally. I can't see how it can be good for a baby to clog up their insides.

It's not potato based, nancy - it's cows milk based, with unmodified protein.

Are you thinking of some of the comfort milks, which include potato starch ?

I think she was hoping that the baby would get more nutrients fro, hungrier baby

She needs to discuss with her HV - she sounds like she could do with some good info.
