Infant feeding

Mastitis and baby feeding more than ever before

My ds is 4 weeks tomorrow and on Friday I developed mastitis, which I'm treating with antibiotics and feeding/expressing. Yesterday and again today ds has cried to be fed every hour, he usually goes 2 to3 hours, and is feeding for up to 40 minutes each time! It's relentless! Could the mastitis or antibiotics be affecting my supply in any way? I'm concerned he is feeding so much because he isn't getting what he needs.

Hey - not the most experience mum out there - just one 11wk DD but she too had a feeding frenzy at 4 wks - it was so out of the blue and round the clock I was worried - MW very pleased as it shows baby is growing and feeding a lot to increase your supply. Never had nasty mastitis - must be really agony - my boobs hurt enough during these spurts (yep, more of them to come). Have you tried the cabbage leaves and also no bra for a while. Hugs. Hang in there. If its growth spurt, which fits at this point, it's a good sign - just awful timing boobwise.

Thanks for that, it could well be a poorly timed growth spurt as he seems happy and healthy in all other respects...my poor boobs! Am having bra free time as often as I can, but I'm rather large and find sweaty underboob coupled with leakage almost more disturbing than the pain! Will buy a cabbage today. That'll give dh a laugh when he gets in!
