my son is 7months old has been breastfed since day one. I've tried to express in the past but he refuses to take it. He is now on 3 small meals a day and breastfed in-between he has a habit of comfort sucking himself to sleep on a night but I am wanting to leave him with my mum overnight for the first time next month. He settles well for her through the day but this will be his first over night stay :-S I can't express more than an ounce so this isn't an option so I'm thinking about trying him with follow on milk I'm worried that this may upset his stomach (I've heard this can happen when switching from breast milk) has anyone got any experience of this? Any advice/ experiences would be much appreciated

Are you wanting to swap every feed, the night ones or just the one night?

As for the expressing, I had a hard time expressing with a manual pump, I switched to an ameda lactaline and pumped while I fed and was able to get some out. It might be worth changing your pump.

you should use first milk for babies upto 12 months. follow on formula was developed to get around advertising banes on first infant milk. it isn't recommended by the NHS and is probably more likely to cause your baby stomach problems as has a higher iron content then first formula.

It's just his last feed before bed and just a one off. I've only tried a manual tommee tippee pump have also hand expressed. I've never used formula was just looking at getting a ready made carton as it's only one feed but don't really know what I'm buying?

You can get first milk in ready made cartons but I would try expressing first. One of the Bfing helplines might give you some tips on how to get more. Have you thought of doing a trial run with your DM too?

I have been using the Mamet technique as this is the only way I know? We are planning a trial run next week as I only live 2minutes away so can soon get to LO if he becomes too upset/refuses his feed etc. I try expressing regularly to use in his porridges etc but can never get much more than an ounce this has been the case since we started introducing baby rice at around 4months. thanks for your comments like I say I'm new to formulas so don't know what's what it's so confusing as the follow on milk says from 6months plus so I thought that's what he must need but obviously it doesn't just work like that?
