When did your periods come back if breastfeeding?

DD is now 15 months, and there's still no sign.... starting to wonder if I've actually hit the menopause!

She still feeds LOTS during the night, but I'm now back at work 4 days a week so am away from her between 6 - 8 hours then, and don't express....

I'm wondering if it's worth going to the docs to get something to kick start it, as I'll hit 40 soon so want to get cracking on #2....

for all 3 it was when they slept through the night, and was weaning through the day (so noticably less milk) around 6-8 months

For dd1 it was about 14 months.

Dd2 it was about 18 months and by 20 months I was pg again. I was still feeding a couple of times a day and in the night too some nights.

18 months. Similar to you, I am at work in the day but feeding overnight. I don't know what triggered it as the feeding pattern hasn't changed but have been regular as clockwork since they returned.

DD1 - around 13 months I think, and I'd stopped BF at 12 months

DD2 - around 13/14 months, and I was still BF, but only once a day I think.

Hmmmm.... well when I'm not working she's still on a "feed every 2 hours day and night" schedule - has never dropped a feed despite eating solids like a horse - I think she just dropped the volume of the milk she takes at each feed.

At night it's also every 2 hours and always has been.... I have a milk monster! Grin.

There is no persuading her that a cuddle or cows milk etc will do - she's very insistent...

Looks like I'll just have to wait!

DC1 - they came back at 9mo. I was back to work and only feeding her once or twice a day at that point.

DC2 - now nearly 14mo and I did have a period of sorts when he was around 10mo, but have been taking my pills back-to-back since then. I've just taken a pill break for a week and no period, which is fine by me!

I am feeding him more than DC1 as I'm a SAHM now. He's also a boob-monster, teething like crazy, and bfing is his night-time comfort, and daytime when I stop moving for long enough for him to pounce on me.

The range is 6 weeks to 42 months.

Mine returned at 22.5 months post partum. DS was feeding 7 or 8 times a day and 1-3 times a night at the time.

A regular long stretch without milk does help, so lots of people find night-weaning helps periods return - but 4 days a week may not be regular enough.

1 year. It was basically when i went back to work doing nights so the night feeds obviously dissappered some of the week. Which is what others have said above!

Wow, you are my twin! Posted about this the other day as I am the same, 15 month old, working 4 days a week and no sign.

I've stretch the gap on my working days to 12 hours, but when I'm at home it is every 4-6 hours or so, I try to distract as much as possible. But we are still doing 1-2 feeds overnight. I am planning a night away at some stage (when time is right) and am hoping a 24 hour gap will trigger it.

In the meantime I'm just looking for signs and hopefully will catch the first ovulation as I don't want a big gap either. I had hoped for a 18 month to 2 year gap but now I'm planning for a 2- 2.5 year gap.

Try again!
Mine didn't reappear until 11 months after I had my second child! We managed to conceive DS2 by accident. So I was period free for 42 months!

16 months after DS was born and still no sign.

He has a bedtime feed and a 6am feed every day and a bonus feed in the middle of the night 4 or 5 times a week.

I fear it may never return.

365 days for me.... if it hadnt been a leap year it would have been a year to the day

she stopped night feeding by 6m, and had been on 3 or 4 feeds a day by then.

LittleWaveyLines · 27/09/2012 22:26

Wow! What a range!

I suppose there's no predicting it, and I'm not going to forcibly wean her as milk is sooooo important to her. Maybe she doesn't want a sibling! Grin

I suspect if / when the night feeding drops off they'll start again. Even though you are working and having a gap away from feeding, the feeding pattern seems a little reversed and the very frequent night feeds are keeping hormone levels up maybe?

That said, I didn't have a period at all between DD1 and DD2, 16 months apart. Good luck for the next one.

DD slept through from five weeks til about 6 months and my periods still haven't returned (yay!) and she's now eight months old.

I think it really varies from woman to woman.
