Did anybody see 'This Morning' er... this morning?

Loads of people on Facebook are saying that Dr Chris (whoever he is) said that breastfeeding increases your risk of getting breast cancer (which is not true, obviously). Did anyone see, can anyone confirm what he actually said?

you can watch it again - it's right at the end of the clip (13-14 mins in) he's listing increased risk factors with breastcancer and breastfeeding is one of them. To be fair he might have just missed out the 'not' from his sentence. I hope so anyway.

We need to get them to do an article on this, saying why what he said was wrong and what the protection from BFing actually is.

yes he did say that, hoping it was a mistake! i have called to complain but the this morning bit was closed, they took my name, number and complaint and said they would call me back tho!

Bloody hell- that is absolutely so wrong of them. They need to be reported to just about everybody we can think of and then some more, and be made to do an apology and a feature on how it reduced your risk!

Is Dr. Chris being paid by formula manufacturers?

No, seriously, I don't think that for a moment. I do however think that this programme, and Daybreak, gets their information about BFing wrong/puts across BFing in a negative light far too often for it to be a coincidence, which is different.

Baby Milk Action needs to be told. It's been discussed on Analytical Armadillo on Facebook but I've not seen it elsewhere. I'm linked to a lot of FB BFing groups so I'm missing something, somewhere.

To be fair having watched the programme I think it was a mistake, think he was being rushed. However i think they need to make it clear on tomorrow show, or do a slot on benefits of bf.

I thought he said not bf but I may have heard what I knew. I was more interested in the first pregnancy over 30 being higher risk

i think they need to say something ON air, i mean who looks at their website? i never do but lots watch the prog, esp preg mothers and those at home on maternity leave etc, its a big mistake to make so should be addressed on air.

LOL at the idea of Dr Chris pushing his own secret formula feeding agenda, back up by money from the manufacturers! Deary me!

I watched it and am pretty certain it was an innocent mistake and he got his words mixed up - I thought exactly that at the time. It is good that they apologised but god, some people really do get het up over breastfeeding dont they!

Oh and also how exactly is bottlefeeding 'damaging' to babies? Ok so I think we can all agree that it is not quite as good as breastmilk, but where is the concrete evidence that it is hurting the thousands of babies (in this country) that are formula fed?

they phoned me back this morning to say that they were sorry about the mix up and that they had discussed it on air to clarify, i couldnt talk as i was just going out of the door to toddler group, but at least they called back :)

i agree with samstown how is formula feeding damaging to a baby. we all know that breast is best but with about the poor mums that planned on breastfeeding and then couldnt for any reason like ME!!!
prem babies seem to cope very well on formula and my LO has coped v well too now 14 weeks and thriving...

Formula feeding isn't necessarily damaging but it does carry some risks (or at least there are risks in not breastfeeding) - increased risk of gastro-enteritis, ear and chest infections, obesity and eczema for the baby and an increased risk of breast cancer for the mother.

Breastfeeding will only reduce your risk of getting breast cancer if for the rest of your life you stay strictly within the recommended weekly alcohol units , if you consume enough antioxidants , regular exercise ,and so on . Breastfeeding is only one factor of which there are many that can help reduce the risk of breast cancer . People who have breast fed can and do get cancer .

Breastfeeding is normal. Formula feeding is not, and as such it carries risks. These include increased risk of enteric infections, ear infections and obesity. Forumla feeding itself is not "damaging to babies" but it carries risks of damage. Clarifying this is important, and these risks are something to be considered when formula feeding is elective.
