Hi, just got home with him this afternoon and had been BF good in the hospital on demand sometimes every 2 hours then 4 hours. He has been awake this afternoon for a few hours when we got back and have tried to feed him 3 times and he is not interested. I'll try again soon. Is this normal for feeds to be this far apart at 1 day old? He weighed 8lb 9oz at birth. Thanks

DS went 6 hours a couple of times in the first few days. Try not to worry, but you could try stripping him down to his nappy and taking off your top and then holding him against you. Skin to skin contact encourages them to feed.

I wouldn't be keen to let it go hours longer though. I was told that if they get very hungry they can become lethargic and don't have the energy to feed.

You could also try hand expressing just a tiny amount so that when you try to get him to feed he can smell/taste it and that will hopefully encourage him.

Hi did you have any pethidine? This can make them a bit lazy.

Perservance is the solution really though.

Congrats btw!

Thanks, no pain relief at all, it all happened way to quick! I've tried the skin to skin and he fell asleep! I'll express a bit more out as I tried that to but it mustnt be enough. Boys!

Could you speak to a midwife? It seems a long time to non-expert me.

I rang the ward last night and the MW told me to do what had already been suggested. I gave him some from a bottle and he took 30ml in about an hour so then at least I knew he had something inside him. When the MW called round today she said he was mucousy and I explained what had gne on and with subsequent feeds was taking 30-40ml in anything from 1-2 hours at me waking him every 4. She seemed happy with that so I'll try him back at the breast once the mucous as gone.
