DC3 is five months and now fully ff for various reasons. He started to choke in the night which was v scary, in his sleep a few hours after his last feed. I took him to the local gp (we were on holiday but still in uk) who diagnosed reflux.
He prescribed infant gaviscon. This helped a bit but night choking continued, and DS was producing v hard solid stools.

I decided to switch to c&g comfort to see if it would help ease the constipation. It has certainly made a difference - DS now has explosive green diarrohea. This happens every couple of days and seems to cause him no discomfort at all. Sorry if TMI but it's like pea soup, runny dark green liquid. It absolutely covers him and no nappy can contain it.

He has been on the milk for 12 days now, having 5x7oz per day, no solids at all yet. It states on the pack that "you may notice a change in your baby's stool consistency (looser) and colour (greener). This is perfectly normal.

Does anyone have any experience of this? I ebf my two other children and this is my first experience of ff. How long should I let this go on before I change formula or consult my gp/hv?

TIA

sorry- forgot to mention, he has a heart murmur which he has regular check ups for. At the last one (2 weeks ago) she said definitely not reflux but maybe sleep apnea so he has had a sleep study done, awaiting results. Next appt is 14 Nov.

i haven't experienced this, i didn't use C&G but it sounds like it's pretty normal if that's what it says on the packet. the only thing i would suggest is trying out different brands of nappies to try and contain it. also you could buy some of those plastic pants that people used to use over terry nappies. you can get them on ebay.

If the other doc said he hasn't got reflux then you don't need to try this formula, I would leave it. I tried C&G with one of mine but he was mixed fed and always dodgy digestion so hard to tell what difference it made, and always on medication that gave him green poo anyway! Gaviscon always caused constipation in mine and made no diff to reflux.

Has your baby got any other symptoms of reflux e.g pain when feeding, feeding very little and often, actual vomiting, sicky burps, sticking tongue out all the time, not liking to be laid flat? DS2 (who had reflux) used to choke after a feed and go blue, it was horrible. He occasionally choked in his bed or woke up coughing, it was always likely it was reflux though as even small amounts of actual sicky milk used to come out (halfway across the room!). Does any of this sound like your baby?

Ooh forgot to say there used to be a similar product to C&G comfort called aptamil (sp) easy digest? Slightly more expensive but might be worth a try.

He had some symptoms which have now eased. DS1 had silent reflux which went undiagnosed until he was 12 months old, at which point he was so poorly he had a general anaesthetic and laryngoscopy (sp?). He was diagnosed with dairy intolerance and put onto C&G Pepti which we got on prescription. He struggled with his breathing and now has a deformed ribcage because of all this. I am obviously keen to not let DS2 suffer in the same way.

DS2 is very happy on C&G Comfort, feeds well and sleeps well. I am just concerned about his awful nappies but he is not bothered at all.

Combine he did have the night choking as you described but not usually during a feed, normally when he was asleep. This is why the dr is now querying sleep apnea. I have had a letter from the hospital today with a new appt for 14 Nov so will find out more then.

Thanks all.

Neville sorry didn't realise you had reflux experience! Blush

Let us know what happens with the sleep apnoea, that sounds worrying.Your poor DS1 with his ribcage. At least your DS2 is happy and the choking is the only symptom. Maybe nappies will settle down in a couple of weeks but if not you could try that easy digest aptamil.

Thanks Combine

It is a bit worrying tbh. I did a sleep study on him last week at home but he was uncomfortable with the monitor straps and so slept really lightly so I have no idea if the results will be valid. His next appt isn't for almost 5 weeks so I guess we won't know any more til then.

I will give the Aptamil a try to see if his nappies improve! He is a very laid back, happy baby, easy to settle and generally no bother at all. I feel blessed that a few leaky nappies are all I have to worry about with him at the moment!

DS was on C&G when he was first put onto gaviscon - nightmare constipation. He has been a lot happier on aptamil with whatever cocktail of drugs he is currently on.

That said we're trying nutramigen as of tomorrow Hmm
