Help!!! Is this thrush?

From this morning i've started to feel a lot of pain while breastfeeding DS who is almost 4weeks old. At the beginning I thought It could be from the cluster feedings, but it got worst feed after feed. The pain is worst when I am feeding and it lasts for long after nursing. I have mastitis and still haven't finished my whole course of antibiotics. I don't have any white spot on the nipple, DS has a white tongue, but it's not patchy and I am sure it is just milk stains as my daughters used to have it. The pain is so bad and after mastitis I am thinking of giving up breastfeeding as I don't enjoy it at all...especially the past week has been so hard for me. Will see the doctor tomorrow, but need to know if anyone has experience this before?

Hi susemyoli i'm sorry that you're having such a hard time. It sounds like it could possibly be thrush, maybe triggered by the antibiotics you are taking for the mastitis. Definitely go to see the doctor tomorrow, and please take a print out of this

hope you get sorted soon

Thank you twincklegreen. I was desperate for the docyor yesterday...(hate sundays)...however this morning the pain seems better. I took a pill of probiotic PROBIO 7 and slept with my breasts fully exposed. This morning the pain is not so bad. I am going to wait for the second feed and see if it's still this way.

Hiya, sorry it's hard. I remember those early days and they were awful. My DS is now 14 weeks and bfeeding is soooo easy! I met a very experienced LC who said that thrush is very over diagnosed. I was told I had it and took treatment but actually it turned out to be vaso spasm which was due to poor latch and attachment. Things got easier as his mouth got bigger to be honest. I was like you and remembered that white mouth from my daughter who didn't have thrush.

Keep airing and taking the pro biotics but don't be so sure it's thrush, but I'm no expert. Things will get better very soon, I promise!

Thank you BettyBum, this is actually my third baby, but everytime is so like the first time...each baby is different. I might know how to change nappies well, but I still get nervous and feel hopeless at times. You're right that it gets easier as their mouth get bigger!
The pain has lessened a lot, now I get only a mild pain in the nipple when he nurses, but at least not deep inside the breast...I am still not sure what it was. I do know that when I was pregnant and got thrush after taking antibiotics...one probiotic pill and the thrush was gone within 24 hours. We'll see...

I had lots of breast pain too but it was vaso spasm, maybe this is the case for you? Are your nipples white after feeding?

No, they're actually quite red. What is vaso spasm?
