Infant feeding

What does your baby weigh? Feeling like my new DS is a fudge!!

I adore my DS2 who is 10 weeks + 4 days, but I keep getting told he is on the large size by everyone. One mum nearly choked on her tongue the other day when she asked how old he was and how much he weighed, but I didn't think he was that big.

Does NOT bother me at all, he is a happy, content little piece of fudge - (full of fat but incredibly sweet). And I don't intend to change anything.

He is 17lb 6oz!

Just wondering what other MN's babies weigh to compare really as he looks normal to me, and I can't really remember what my DS1 looked like at this age.

Just curios!

Wow! DD weighed 12lb 13oz at 5 months!

Where is he on the centiles? My DS was about 20 weeks before he weighed that. Is the HV etc worried?

Report
whostolemyname · 17/09/2011 21:19

Is he long? That does seem quite big!

Report
mummy22gorgeousboys · 17/09/2011 21:22

He's on the 99th percentile for weight and 75th for length. HV not worried at the moment, due a home visit in a couple of weeks so see what she says then.

He's happy enough, and I'm happy, it's just with everyone saying he's big I just wondered what others' weigh. It can't be that uncommon??

uMy Dd is 11 weeks and is 11lbs.

that puts him on about the 90th centile right?

so he's fine. bigger than most babies, but not off the charts?

has he always been big?

Report
thisisyesterday · 17/09/2011 21:25

is he breastfed? cos breastfed babies do tend to gain quickly in the first few weeks and then gradually plateau.

someone has to be at the top of the chart! ds2 was similar... he was only weighed at 6 weeks, but i'll see what he was then. he was VERY fat though, but is now a very average 50th centile all over 4yr old!

TittyBojangles · 17/09/2011 21:25

If he is 99th centile then that means that 99% of babies are smaller than him so it is fairly uncommon, though as it is a 'normal' distribution curve then anywhere on it is is normal.

Well if he's 99th centile for weight, he will be unusually big as only 1 baby out of 100 at the same age will weigh more than him.

My DS has always been big too - at 18 months he was bigger than many 3 year olds.

Yes, he is a good size! My dd was larger than her peers in her baby group and I recall clearly that she weighed 15lb at 15 weeks (9lb 2oz born).

PelvicFloorsOfSteel · 17/09/2011 21:34

I didn't get DS2 weighed between 6 weeks and 25 weeks but he was on the 98th centile both times so presumably at 10 weeks he weighed 17lb10oz! (I think we must have slightly different charts).

DS1 moved up through the centiles from 50th to 75th and I remember the HVs being a bit Hmm about it, he is now a slim and lively 3yo. No-one seems as bothered by DS2 as he's following a line, even though it's one near the top.

k can't find ds2's red book. but ds3 was 6.5kg at 6 weeks... that's 14.3lb (dot on chart is between the 98th and 99.6th centiles)

My boy was 16lb 4oz at 10 weeks - that was on the 98 centile. He is now nearly 18 weeks.

I keep getting told I must have difficulty feeding him etc. Well - obviously not!!

DS was around 99% centile (and probably still is, although I haven't had him weighed for months). He did go off the charts a few times as well. He's a gorgeous little chunk though Smile

DS is 15lb 15oz at 16 weeks (75th centile) but is off the chart for length!

DD3 at 24 months weighs 19lbs!

At 10 weeks my 4 weighed respectively:

DS (8lbs 12 at birth): about 14lbs
DD1 (7 lbs 8 at birth): just under 10lbs
DD2 (7lbs 9 at birth): just under 10lbs
DD3 (7lbs 6 at birth): 10lbs 5

Ooh, thanks for your responses.

DS in question is bottlefed, he was 8lb 8oz at birth, so not particularly big, he just LOVES to drink milk!

Nice to hear there's a few more bouncy babies out there.

He's perfectly in proportion, he doesn't look like an inflated whoopi cushion, just very solid , very cute and very fudge!

If he's bottle fed I would be careful not to overfeed, especially as his height and weight are on different centiles. Maybe offer him a dummy to see if it is just comfort sucking he's after rather than milk all the time?

He sounds gorgeous, but it is worth thinking about how much he is drinking and whether it is a lot more than the guidelines recommend. My DD was a very "sucky" baby and found her thumb, but could have been downing milk as a comfort instead.

My DS was 13lb 9oz at 6 weeks, so couldn't have been far off your DS at 10 weeks... But he was long too, just looking at his chart - he was just under 99.6th centile for length then! He has always been big though (9lb 4oz at birth).

Just keep an eye. I'm sure once he starts getting mobile it will all change anyway!

My daughter is 10 weeks old today and weighs just 10lb. She is breastfed and was 6lb 6 when born.

I get everyone saying she is so small.

I thought he may be drinking for comfort a few weeks ago but he will NOT take a dummy. I've bought 3 different types and he isn't interested at all.

He does mouth his fists a lot, but he does only get fed at his 'meal' times, I don't feed him to comfort him, but I will bear it in mind.

he feeds every 3-4 hours during the day, cluster feeds little and often in the evening from about 5pm-9.30pm then wakes for 1 feed at 4.30am. So he's in a routine now.

Thanks for everyone's input!

Have just checked my red book for DS and he was 18lb 15oz at 11 weeks. He was b'fed and I was told you couldn't overfeed a bf baby but he was feeding hourly day and night and in hindsight, I think a lot of it was for comfort.
