severe hiccups in ebf 4 week old...is this normal?

my ebf 4 week old baby gets hiccups after pretty much every feed. We are using infacol for her wind and griping pains which is helping and she tends to have 1 or 2 really good burps but then always follwoed by a good ten minutes of really severe hiccups. She often brings up whole mouthfuls of milk with the first few hiccups and its starting to upset me and means she wont settle to sleep and is hungry again so soon.

Any ideas how to avoid this?? or how to help her? HV suggested cool boiled water but i thought you weren't supposed to give them anything other than milk?!?!?

As long as she is growing well, having plenty of wet and dirty naooies and, is contented you have nothing to worry about. Hiccoughs are absolutely normal in young babies as their nervous systems are still very young.

Do not under any circumstances give your baby cooled boiled water. It is not necessary and will not lessen her hiccoughs, but may fill her tummy with water and affect ther demand for bm, which in turn can affect your supply. It is really bad advice from your hv. Sorry.

My DD (11 weeks) also has severe hiccups, always has. When i was pregnant with her she would have them 4/5 times a day and still does. I find that not moving her too much straight after a feed helps, let her just sit for 2 minutes or so before burping her and keep her quite upright (easier said than done with a newborn)
It used to worry me too, my HV told me it is a sign that she is thriving and the doctor said it was a sign that her diaphragm is working properly.

Like wolfcub, my DS used to hiccup like crazy before he was born and continued after. Doesn't seem to cause him any distress (but means he gets through a helluva lot of t-shirts...) Starting to ease now he's 16 weeks but still gets them at least every couple of days.

Does she settle well between feeds? Does she feed well? Does she really arch her back and scream? My DCs 1 & 3, but not 2, both had/have dreadful hiccups and I think it's related to the fact they both had/have reflux. Both started hiccuping before they were born as well. If she's generally thriving and happy then I wouldn't worry about the hiccups. If it's tied in with other signs there's something wrong then it might be worth investigating.

DS had hiccups from when i was about 36weeks pregnant and he's 4 weeks now and doesn't stop either! He cries sometimes through frustration I think, but hes perfectly healthy!

possible reflux as I was advised lots of hiccups could mean this. DD has recently been diagnosed.

My 20week dd still gets hiccups all the time (she has silent reflux). I just have to try and keep her upright for as long as possible after a feed, sometimes up to an hour. I find to get rid of the hiccups to give a bit more feed. I used to use cooled boiled water but that was my decision and I know alot of people don't like to.
Gripe water works sometimes but milk works every time.
