Is porridge a breastfeeding 'super food'?

I know the advice for BF mothers is 'a healthy diet' with plenty of fruit/veg and fluids, but I've also heard that porridge boosts supply/makes better milk? Anyone else heard the same?

I've also heard that citrus fruits can make babies more colicky?

It's funny because I'm on DC3 now and have naturally craved porridge and have swapped orange juice for apple juice in the morning, even though I love orange juice I seem to have gone off it! I wonder if my body has finally learnt what is good for BF?!

I've heard of porridge oats as a traditional remedy for the baby blues, and I suppose by extension they could therefore be said to help BF.

Really, though, I've never found any foods which particularly boost milk supply. Though both DCs seem very happy whenever I munch on chocolate whilst BF Grin...

I read recently that oats can help boost supply so maybe there's something in it??

I've definitely noticed that DC3 is a much 'easier' baby, less feeds, sleeping through quite early on, less wind, so it may have worked for me. I've also been drinking smoothies this time round (again, craving!). Strange though that I didn't have any cravings during pregnancy, but have had loads whilst BF!

Yes, I've read that oats are good for boosting supply.
I tried all the herbal/traditional galactagogues while trying to boost supply for my skinny little boy the other year, but can't recall where I read about it.

Word of advice though, porridge, not flapjacks.

Porridge is very good for you though, so even if there is no specific milk increasing effect, it's a great food for a bf mother to eat.

There's no scientific evidence but it's good for you so knock yourself out Grin

The thing about citrus fruit is bobbins, the vast majority of mothers can eat whatever they like (including garlic, onions, peppers, spicy food and all that stuff).

There's some good info on breastfeeding and diet here.

Old wives tales, but won't do any harm.

Fenugreek does, but you have to take a lot!
