Excess lipase? Advice welcomed.

Hi all - apols if this is long and rambling but am keen to give all the facts!

My DS is 9 weeks old tomorrow. I breast feed him but have always been keen to ensure he takes a bottle, so that I know I'm able to get a break (and as am due to go in for day surgery next week). I had been expressing and DH was giving him his 11pm feed quite happily from about 4/5 weeks onwards. We were using Avent bottles. During his 6 week growth spurt, I fed him exclusively to keep up my supply and then my DH went on a trip so I carried on feeding myself, rather than faff around with bottles. When we tried to re-introduce the bottle he wasn't keen, and we changed to Tommy Tippee instead. This seemed to work a treat and he took a few bottles quite happily from me, so last week we tried to get him to take a bottle from DH again. The first night he took a big feed but not as much as usual and started crying straight after. I thought it was just the change in taking the bottle from DH instead of me. When I went to empty the bottle I noticed the milk smelt horrible - cheesy (like brie - TMI?!) - and I posted on here as was worried I'd fed him rancid milk. The milk had not been frozen & had been stored correctly. It hadn't been warmed but allowed to reach room temperature in a cool room over about 30-45 mins.

The past 2 nights, I've tried him with EBM again. It smells fine (well - of nothing!) when you take it out of the fridge but starts to take on the a mildly cheesy aroma as it warms - I assume it would get worse over time. Tonight I tried warming it quickly by putting the bottle in warm water but it still smelled slightly. On both nights he has taken between 10-30mls only before deciding just to chew on the teat.

Could this be lipase or am I doing something wrong with storing/expressing/warming? And if it is - what now? I really appreciate all your expertise on this so thanks in advance.

Sorry - should have said the reason I was questioning the lipase issue is die to it being fresh EBM not frozen and fact he used to take it quite happily until he was 8 weeks old or so.

...also (can you tell this is stressing me out?!) would it harm him if he did take it? Or just a taste preference issue?

..I should have mentioned I have tasted it the past two nights and though it did have the mildly cheesy smell it tasted fine - otherwise I wouldn't have offered him it.

Don't worry, it won't harm him. Sounds more like he doesn't want the bottle really, although it may be a lipase problem. Will he take really, really fresh BM from a bottle?

Thanks for reply. I had to leave him with DH yesterday and he sank loads of my funky smelling milk so think you were right - the issue was more about taking a bottle (when the option to BF was in the room!). When I went to feed him (after 3 bottle feeds) he was hilarious - kicking his legs with glee to be back on the boob! Smiling while latched on - super cute
