Thrush in breast

hello ladies, this is my first thread so apologies if it's a bit long winded or got things wrong! I've looked and couldn't find a thread about this, if there is one already, please point me in the right direction.

I've been bf my 10 week old with very occasional bottles (when he just won't settle and won't take the breast and I feel empty). I've had sensitive nipples for weeks now (can't bear to let shower water directly on them etc) and the last couple of days been getting shooting pains in my right boob. Remembered something from bf drop in to another new mum that this was a sign of thrush, so went to GP today.

Anyway, had googled first before booking in to see whether or not it was worth going or me over-reacting (anyone else do that?!) and read that you should take remedy for 2 weeks whether or not the symptoms were clear. When I got home, worked out prescribed meds will last approx 5 days!! Is oral medicine for DS and for me to put some on my nipples after feeding.

Have since read further on page I initially googled and it says that generally the stuff I've been prescribed isn't given anymore because it doesn't always work. I dont know why but I always do this. I never go into the GP armed with knowledge and questions, always just go with what they say and worry after!

Bloody hell, just seen how much I've written! Anyway, my point is has anyone had this? If so, what did you do to get rid and did it come back? I'm in agony after feeds and hate taking painkillers because of them going to DS in breastmilk.

DD and I had thrush. My HV told the GP what to prescribe - sorry I can't remember what it was.
It was gel for DD's mouth and cream for my nips.
I did as told and it cleared up in about a week.
I didn't bother doing DD's mouth after that (she hated it) but I kept on creaming for a while.
It has not come back so far and that was months ago.

I had it with DS. From memory, we were prescribed Daktarin gel (for mouth) and Canestan cream for me. It seemed to clear it up

Thrush isn't the only cause of nipple pain but there's some info from Breastfeeding Network here

If it is thrush, print out that leaflet and take it to the GP to ensure you get the right treatment. If the pain is in your breast rather than just on your nipples you might need a course of fluconazole to clear it up.

The only thing that knocked it on the head for me was oral Fluconozole for me - I think 10 days in total or perhaps it was 2 weeks and oral Daktarin for baby. I had the shooting pains (like laser beams) and first GP told me it was mastitis and sent me away with anti-b's. Useless tosser. 2nd GP was much better.

I had a one pill dose of fluconozole and Nystin(sp?) drops for DS, smelt like almonds. I had no symptoms though, DS had the white tongue the only symptom between us.

Thank you all. GP confirmed that it was thrush but was my suggestion in the first place. I've been given Nystatin for DS but have been told to also put on my nips after I give it to him?! Going to give it til Monday morning and if it's not cleared up I'll try and see another doc. Good idea to get in touch with health visitor, will call her Monday too - although I'm not sure how Confident I am with her...

Have you looked at that leaflet Jode? Gives a bit more info on correct treatments - nystatin isn't very effective in treating oral thrush and seems unlikely to be any good for breast thrush.

@RitaMorgan, thanks for that, I must have missed it the first time. Definitely points towards it, pain is in my breast rather than just the nips, and is during and after feeds. Also DS was 2 wks late and had to be induced. Have been to bf drop in and been told my technique is ok although couldn't make it this week. Will go to town today and see if I can get acidofillus, I'm sure it'll be ok to take that at sane time as nystatin? Does it go through my milk to DS or do i need to give him something separately?
