Infant feeding

Fast let down/high supply and windy newborn

I am sure I got loads of advice on this with DD1, but I just can't think...

I have a fairly 'abundant' supply and fast let down. Although DD2 (2 weeks) has a good latch and feeds well and I'm not sore, she does that 'clicking' thing which indicates she is breaking her latch and letting in air. I'm fairly sure that this is because she can't cope with the volume of milk coming her way.

The problem is, she's getting terrible wind as a result. Can anyone remind me of tips to help until she's bigger and can cope with the supply better. I know about expressing at the start of the feed (though never found it much help when I tried it), but I'm sure there were other tips?

Thanks in advance.

if you lean back (and put your feet up Grin) it'll be easier to cope with the flow as she will be angled down rather than sideways or facing up slightly. Like when you lean forward to sip a fizzy drink through a straw rather than tipping your neck back to glug a bottle of something

Congratulations on your baby!

Have you tried reclining backwards slightly whilst feeding her. DD was the same and having my boobs pointing more upwards seemed to stop her getting so drowned and gulpy. Does that actually make sense?... :)

I had a strong letdown on one side for a while and would take ds off as I felt the letdown and spurt onto a muslin Grin

If you have an oversupply you could try block feeding to reduce your supply a bit - so only feeding on the right side for 3 hours, then the left side for the next three hours etc.

Uphill, that's what my addled brain was struggling for! Thank you.

It's not so bad to need block feeding this time (I did it last time), but I do tend to only feed from one side (or one and a 'bit') per feed. Thanks Rita.
