Infant feeding

If my 2 week-old will go 6 hours between feeds at night...

... should I be waking her every 3-4 hours as my HV has suggested? Or should I thank my lucky stars and enjoy the sleep?

Last night she slept from 11-5 and previous nights have been almost as long. She feeds well in the day, has been cluster feeding in the evening. Plenty of wet/dirty nappies and when she was weighed on wednesday at 13 days, she was 10 oz over her birth weight. I'm not keen on setting an alarm and getting less sleep if I don't need to, so thought I'd see what others think.

She's my DD2, but I never had this 'problem' with DD1!

Let her sleep!! If nothing else you don't want her to get into the habit of waking every 3 to 4 hours if she isn't naturally.

As long as she is getting lots of milk during the day and putting on weight then there is nothing to worry about.

I had a similar thing with DD1, she didn't feed for about 12 hours after she was born, and then only because I made her. I had to wake her up usually to feed her, and she was sleeping through by 4 weeks.

I would leave her as long as she is feeding in the day, has wet nappies and seems happy. If she has jaundice/breast milk jaundice you should wake her to feed.

No!!!!! As long as gaining weight it seems pointless.

10oz weight gain and plenty of wet and dirty nappies, let her sleep. Your Hv is clearly mad Grin

I would let her sleep. Is she getting at least 8 feeds overall?

I had to wake mine for the first couple of weeks due to jaundice, but once he was gaining weight I let him sleep as long as possible at night.

Thanks everyone, I won't worry if she sleeps well again tonight then! She doesn't have jaundice.

My DS did this from about day 4 - well, it was usually 10-3 or 4 or something. I was Shock because DD was a terrible sleeper. 10oz weight gain is loads at just 2 weeks, so I reckon with all the other signs you can presume BF is going well and just enjoy your sleep!

Isn't the reason for feeding every 3-4 hours not just to help ensure weight gain but also to avoid big fluctuations in blood sugar level in someone so little? That's what my HV told me. I never let my DS go more than four hours until he was about three months old I think (and massive by that stage). It was hard work. Would be interested in any posts from people with medical knowledge who can debunk this (or second it....)
