Ok so I?ve read the politics of Bfing, and What Mothers Do, what shall I read next? I am going to treat myself to a new book :)

I'll try to get a list of suggestions together as much for the readers of this thread, but can't do now.

One to mention, Gabrielle Palmer has just come out with a new book (soon to be released).

Off the top of my head, I would start with Fresh Milk, Mothering your nursing toddler, motherhood, loving every (other) minute of it.

I've pre-ordered the new Gabrielle Palmer, the Australian Breastfeeding Association's Breastfeeding Naturally is good, and the Oxytocin Factor looks promising (on my book shelf waiting for a suitable moment).

Absolutely. I think life will calm down a little bit after this week! Oh and another book that I think is fab, but I only have on my Kindle, is the Breastfeeding Mother's Guide to Making More Milk. It's a real insight.

Shame truth lives so far away. We could have fun :)

Sorry I live in deepest darkest Sussex but would love to swap books. I am willing to post if there is anything that takes anyone's fancy. I have in my library:-

Ina May's Guide to bfing
The Oxytocin Factor
Saggy boobs and other bfing myths
The Mommy Brain (not a bfing book but a good science/research-y book on the Mummy brain/placenta brain myth)
Blooming Birth (good impartial book on l&d with a doula-ish slant)
Politics of Bfing
The New Experience of Childbirth - Sheila Kitzinger (withdrawn from Library so cost me 10p!)
Bfing ....Naturally - Australian Bfing Association

Obviously it would only be a loan but always good to see if you'd like a book enough to buy it.

I've just read Bfing older children by Anne sinnot and Adventures in tandem nursing by hillary flowers...both really interesting.

Is BFing older children the pink one with all the research about BFing older children? (I had an overwhelming urge to add the word "like" at the end of that ungainly sentence).

I really like that one and have it cossie.

truth I've never got around to buying Ina May although a lot of people say it's wonderful. Is it as good as they say? Are there any books you need for the MS course?

When it comes to BF, read your baby. I definitely recommend reading while BF. I enjoy anything by Joseph Heller or Tom Robbins.

harecare i don't think that's helpfull. There are a constant stream of threads on here from people who think they can't satisfy their baby/aren't making enough milk/have lost their milk etc etc all because they don't understand how bf/bf babies work. If they were to "read their babies" a lot would see the word "formula"

There's also a suprising ounce of people who think "formula's just as good", "it's wierd to bf a toddler" , "it's risky to bf while pg" etc etc. The more we can inform our selves, the more info we can pass on, and hopefully the more babies will get more bm.

Rots yes it is that one. I found it really interesting.

harecare I don't have time to read while feeding any more as my ds is 9.5 m and I am back at work ft. I am looking for reading matter to improve my knowledge on bfing as it is a subject that I find really interesting. Thanks for suggestions everyone, my amazon wishlist is growing, but in the meantime, the womanly art is on its way to me.....

OCC - I am on the transition module at the moment but when I did the MS module I used Counselling the Nursing Mother - A Lactation Consultants Guide by Judith Lauwers & Anne Swisher and Breastfeeding & Human Lactation by Jan Riordan (on google books!).

I will need to use POB for definite!

I've not read the whole of Ina May's but it looks promising (don't think I will take it to my local bfing group as I think it might be a bit hippy-ish for most!)

TruthSweet- those last two sound useful - unfortunately I can't find them under 50 squid so may have to save up for those.

I like Ina May's guide too and have been using the LLL book of Breastfeeding Answers a fair bit for my module.

I still haven't read The Womanly art of breastfeeding, as I still can't decide if I should get that one or the Dr Jack Newman one.

If you google certain phrases you get to read the books (some pages are missing but the majority seem to be readable). Try 'bottle vacuum feeding suck' in google books (option on the left under 'more') to get into Counseling the Nursing Mother and 'prolactin levels night breastfeeding' to get into 'Breastfeeding and Human Lactation'.

It's not as good as the books being on your shelf but needs must

I'd get the Jack Newman one if I had a choice. I've got the WAoBF and it's ok but not the most fantastic book on bfing ever written Mine was given to me on passing the LLLI PS course so I should love it...

I loved Womanly, but I can't say I learnt lots from it - just the odd thing. It was just a nice, reassuring kind of read. cos I think you'd be the same as me. Maybe pick up one or two things, or clarify something, or remind you of something, but that's about all. But it's a lovely, solid tome to have in your collection , and also I suppose it's a useful reference book for the basics - or rather should I say, normality.

moon Yes, ok we're talking about the same thing, and I do have it. I bought everything I could on term/extended/etc.

It's interesting how challenges change. With this child I've been totally unconcerned about BFing in public and would even have welcomed a challenge (although I guess few people really notice when you get the knack anyway) but I am starting to feel a leeetle bit different with DS at a year old. But I've recently discovered that there's a BFing group near me with a mum who BFs 3 yr olds, and another mum feeding, I think, a 2 YO, so I'm going to visit, and also go to a LLL.

truth at the ABM meeting I picked up the details of the publisher that publishes all the LC books. All scarily expensive but I see them coming my way in the near future none the less.

cos I think for light reading you'll enjoy Fresh Milk. I'll put it to one side for you. For learning stuff, thanks all for lots of good suggestions :)

BTW, we should all make use of our NCT libraries which most regions have. I wonder if any of our local council libraries have any of these books - or can get them? Would be worth it to see if they're worth buying. Oh, and cos and moon, Little Angels in Pontefract have a small library too which you could poss borrow from (certainly you could of course cos).

Ah that's interesting about the group in ponte having a library...it's not far from me. I got "bf older children" from the library...it was just sat on the shelf in garforth library! Was rather to see it there!

Cos and Rots, as an aside i'm starting up a "natural parenting" group in leeds...first meeting. Tues 5th july...i can email you a flyer if you'd like. Even if you can't come maybe you know someone else who might want to or who could do with knowing likeminded others.
