Gassy bf baby - any tips?

poor little DD2 (5weeks) gets a terribly windy bum occasionally & gets very upset by it I'm going to start giving her tummy rubs throughout the day to try to stop the wind from building up, but do you have any other things I can try to make her more comfortable?

How's her latch? Sometimes if it is a wee bit off they can take in air. Worth trying a bfing group plus they are good for moral support!

Lots of back rubbing.

There are things like infacol and colief or homeopathic things too. I don't rate them and there is no evidence they work, but sometimes it helps just to be doing something for them.

Keep her upright over you shoulder too.

Both my boys took a few months to get used to the whole 'having working bowels' thing and got distressed. Even if it doesn't feel it, your cuddles wil help her and she will know she is not alone.

If you are getting tired/stressed, give her to another family member and have a rest.

I used a different sort of winding technique after each feed, which seemed to get the gas out straight away so it didn't build up. DS used to belch like a fully grown man which got some strange looks and impressed all the men at my work!!

Instead of rubbing his back, I'd sit him up on my knee and moved his torso clockwise in a circle. Difficult to explain, but his bum stayed in the same place and his body leaned back, then to the left, then forwards, then to the right and repeat. I'd follow this up with rubbing his back if he hadn't burped or if I thought there was more gas to come out.

cattle my DDs both burp really loudly too, it's amazing that such a sound can come out of a little baby! . I've never seen/heard of your technique, but will give it a go!

nethun I think our latch is ok, but I'm going to get it checked out as it would be much easier if the air wasn't getting in her in the first place! I got some infacol last week & it did seem to work really well for a couple of days, (huge belches just by getting her upright!) but it's effectiveness seems to have worn off

DD1 suffered terribly with gas (screaming every night from 11-4) until she was about 4 months old. I'm very scared that DD2 will be the same!
