Infant feeding

Top tips for dealing with comments from friends?

It's my friend's birthday party tomorrow night - her 50th so a biggie. Her husband is one of DS's godfathers and she's one of my closest friends although we don't see each other as often as we might as we live 2 hours away from each other now.

At DS's christening he was about 3 months old and BF on demand which at that age meant a lot! My friend's husband felt really awkward about me BFing in front of him and made some "is he feeding again" comments (I ticked the bingo box :) ) It was nothing to do with being able to see anything as I had a muslin covering everything - it was the concept of BFing that made him uncomfortable.

DS is now nearly 11 months and I don't think for a moment that it would have crossed his mind that I'll still be BFing. I suspect that there may be the odd comment more out of surprise than anything else but I'm feeling a bit awkward about how to respond to anything said. I will be taking a scarf because the nursing dress I have isn't that great and while I wouldn't normally use one I just feel in this context it's appropriate.

It's out of character for me to be jittery but I am. Support needed :)

If someone asked me if I was STILL feeding then I replied, with the biggest smile I could manage, "Yes, isn't it FANTASTIC. I never thought I would get this far".

Shuts them up nicely.

"Oh sorry you must have misheard me, he is 11 months old not 11 years don't worry not scarey wierdo yet"

Thanks guys :)

He's a fab bloke - obviously as we chose him as godfather! I find that I'm in a BFing bubble, though, and sometimes it's a shock to realise that BFing a toddler isn't seen that much.

But with an evening party and a boy who likes his evening milk, there's not much in the way of choice!

Depends on the circumstances. Ds is the same age and sometimes I make a joke of it but I have started saying, "WHO recommend atleast 2 yrs and in lots of countries its normal to feed til 3 or 4."

When they do this Shock, I say something like, "I know I was really surprised too. It just shows how distanced we've become from norml breastfeeding practices in this country."

Love it, Humphrey, with the right timing that would just get the whole thing kicked into touch, wouldn't it!

I've been working on adapting the Humphrey line for my own circumstances. "You won't want to be feeding much longer now she has teeth" - "Oh no, it turns out you can keep going even when they get teeth, isn't it great!"

:)

Well in the end I needn't have worried.

I'd taken a wrap to "cover" us because the nursing dress I have is one of those with a cross front that you pull a part to the side, but essentially you are sticking your boob through a hole which just isn't pretty! (Note to self: get new nursing dress). However, Bub was having none of that and just fought and fought it. I was sitting with a friend and we ended up wetting ourselves with laughter over it all. So I just got on with it anyway, when required, without the wrap. The friend I was worried about just came over and chatted to me and mentioned nothing, but was obviously very comfortable, and I got some lovely smiles from some ladies that I didn't know (older ladies).

So all was well. :)
