13mnth old biting, hsn't fed for few days - self weaning?

Hi, been a bit worried about this , not sure whats going on with DD. She hasn't had a proper feed since Sunday lunchtime, now weds. She all of a sudden just started to properly bite me when I try to feed her - she seems to want it, I start to feed her, she bites the nipple, my boob, pulling away as well when clamped on, very painful!

She has only been feeding morning and evening now for ages, was beginning to seem less interested in the evening, but mornings is usually ravenous. She drinks a fair bit of milk in the day, but no more than 5 or 6 oz. Has lots of cheese, yoghurt etc, so not too worried about her milk intake, although also she has begun spitting the milk out, blowing raspberries whilst drinking, which is odd. She will drink water fine.

She recently has two bottom teeth come through, does seem to bother her a bit, but she has fed fine through them cutting, this is recent.

I managed to feed her yesterday as she was half asleep on me and woke briefly, didn't bite then.

Just wondering if anyone thinks this is self weaning, and should I be trying to get her to drink more milk/give her more cheese etc? Not really sure how much is recommended at this age?

I am feeling a bit down about it, also got my period back recently, so very hormonal and a bit fed up, does anyone know if stopping suddenly like this, even after only a couple of feeds a day, always results in being hormonal/getting sore?

Not sure really, but did the return of your period coincide with this biting?
Periods can make your supply drop a bit so maybe this has been frustrating for her?

Hope someone else can offer some suggestions for you. Smile

I did consider this, this is my second one since she was born, started yesterday but she has been biting since Sunday - can't remember if she was biting last time, certainly wouldn't have been as bad as this though, I would have remembered that!

She doesn't seem bothered that she isn't feeding though, its mainly me thats a bit silly about it Sad. She just btes, then sucks her thumb! It is just so strange.

Had hoped to keep going for a bit longer, although she really wasn't able to be settled to sleep by feeding anymore, it did comfort her, she has her jabs coming up and was relying on it!

TBH it sounds like a nursing strike to me rather than self-weaning: self-weaning usually involves dropping one feed at a time over a long period of time.

Kellymom has some info on how to get through nursing strikes & you can find more if you google / search on the archives here.

Is she teething? That can sometimes cause it.

DS went on strike at 13 months, which lasted 12 days. It turned out he had an ear & chest infection.

It is hard not to feel really upset though - I was a bit of a mess.

If you want to keep going with bf, I'd express for comfort & to keep up your supply if you can (although I'd imagine by this age it's fairly robust) and offer bf in a non-pressured way as much as you can - when sleepy and just waking up are often more successful.

Well I just came on here to type a post regarding my DD who is currently doing exactly the same! The only difference is my DD is 8 months.

I'm really quite bothered about this as 1. We are BLW so her while her intake of food is good i don't think it was her main source of nutrition (until now) 2. She is allergic to dairy so we cannot simply switch to formula to ensure her diet is adequate 3. I just really dont want to stop feeding her now

She has also been tugging her ears recently so I think I may get her ears checked-the reason I hvent been yet is that we are actually away at the moment. I've had to go out and buy a pump to keep supply up and she does actually take a bottle of expressed milk which is good (particularly as she didn't previously know how to drink from a bottle!)

But going forward I don't know what to do. She is juts not interested. She bites my nipple and then arches her back she's telling me she doesn't want it so I can't force her. I've tried at different times and different places/positions but still no luck

I had a brief look at the Kellymom website but the advice appears to be for newborns?? Also unable to search mm archives as the search function currently doesnt work on my phone.

If anybody does have any other advice I'd appreciate it also. 12 days is a long time to strike and I just don't know if my supply could cope :(

Hope we can get our babies sorted soon op

Yes could be teething here also-DD had her two bottom teeth through but could possibly be getting top two? May also explain ear tugging?

Kellymom has links at the bottom of that page - here are some of them: LLL FAQs, LLL and a whole lot of other links.

Old MN threads for around the 8-10 month age here, here, here and here.

I think the most important thing is patience. I think in our case DS didn't resume normal feeding till he'd had antibiotics for long enough to clear the ear infection.

12 days seems to be longer than the average as far as I can tell. The longest I've heard of was 40 days. Shock

Expressing will help your supply. Of course it will dip, but it's unlikely to fail completely. I didn't manage to express a lot while DS was on strike, although I could feed him a bit when sleepy / asleep. When my DS resumed feeding, he had looooooong feeds for a few days while he increased my supply, then he went back to a 'normal' feeding pattern.

A call to one of the breastfeeding helplines might be useful too. Some people hire hospital grade / double pumps - you can get them from the NCT and probably other places too.

Thanks for the replies, and hope your situation improves soon Pykel - maybe if you are worried re not eating much, you could up the yoghurts/cheese etc? we did BLW, but we always let her have a spoon for runny things, usually it was her doing it with us helping a bit, as she was so hungry she would get frustrated at not being able to get it in quickly enough! Her food intake sped up loads around 8/9 months I think, before it was just playing.

It's less of a worry with DD as she eats like a horse, but her behaviour is just so strange. She has now been rejecting the beaker of milk she has, hasn't had any today. Then when we got home, after a cuddle, she let me feed her, for a while, without biting..first time since Tuesday.
She doesn't seem bothered, so I will just make sure she is drinking water and eating lots of dairy I guess, and keep offering. I'm not sore or anything, my supply seems fine - and if you can manage 12 days Angeldog there is hope!

I love MN - was just about to post about my DD who is 8 months, biting (drew blood yesterday the little sod !) & refusing milk, so thanks for the MN/kellymom links. We're BLW too, Pykel, although don't have the dairy issues, it's great to know we're not alone! Have found it really upsetting trying to feed her & she either bites or pulls away & seems really distressed (although i might have upset her with my reaction when she properly chomped my nipple yesterday...). She's just getting her second tooth through, so hopefully is just a teething-related thing. And I've spent the last few days potty training DD1, so maybe it's her way of reminding me she exists! Might have to invest in a new breast pump to get through this though coz my avent one seems to have developed a sinister creaking noise every time I use it & it's starting to do my head in :)

Hi everybody thanks so much for tour replies links and support and especially you angeldog :)

Well im very pleased to report DD is now feeding as normal. I went to a breastfeeding clinic near where I was staying who obviously didn't have any magic answers it was nice to speak to somebody. I started by dream feeding DD in her sleep morning and night which oddly she took no problem! That was from the Friday night then Monday morning she just woke up and fed! No idea what was happening or why teeth perhaps (should also mention that on the Thursday night I had taken her to the nhs walk in clinic which could find nothing wrong with her ears)

Anyway how are you all getting on with your babies? Thanks once again to all
