Infant feeding

can you definitely not overfeed a bf baby?

hello, just wondering if anyone has any knowledge/experience of rapidly growing babies?
my ds(20 wks) was 6lb 7 when he was born two weeks early, sitting on the 9th centile. you could tell he wasn't quite full term and was meant to be a bit bigger as he had folds of loose skin everywhere. he lost a good 12% of his weight as we struggled to bf in the first few days, but once he got the hang of it, well....
he is just over 20 weeks and i weighed him today and he is around 21lbs, which puts him in between the 98th and 99.6th centile, it's quite a jump.
i have had him weighed previously and he had been moving up the graph, he was in between the 25th and 50th at 8wks. if he keeps going at this rate he will shortly be off the scale.
i don't remember looking at centiles with dd, i have clearly developed precious second born syndrome! but then she was a normal size Blush

BF babies tend to gain quickly at first and then slow down a bit.
Are you looking at a BF growth chart?
Sounds like you've both cracked the BF Grin

Nah, can't overfeed them! :)
My DS fed constantly for days on end when he was on a growth spurt, just "putting in his order" for more milk in a few days I think!
Plus he also fed for comfort and also when he suffered from colic. Whatever he didn't want/need he just vomited up.

i've just been using the chart at the back of the red book, although i've just looked and it says it's based on breastfed babies. i was expecting him to have slowed down a bit, which is why i was a bit Shock when i weighed him today!
Countess he is teething really badly just now and i think he often feeds for comfort, he just doesn't seem to have mastered the vomiting part!

As long as you are ebf it should be fine. He will probably slow down a bit when you start weaning and then again when he starts to move around.

DS is about the same size and age, he started on the 50th centile, he's got very tall too. When he starts crawling he'll use up his "reserves"

All mine got chubby on breastmilk but DS3 got really big! I do think he was born greedy, he is 6 now and I still have to keep an eye on his snacking tendancies. He has slimmed down gradually as he has grown but it has taken about 5 years.

Thanks for the replies. i do prefer a chubby baby, but it would also be nice to be able to lift him in his car seat without going "heeeuuurrgghh!!!" Smile

my ds had man boobs on his man boobs at 20 wks, we could not find any trousers that would go over his tummy. All my family were on about obesity and fat cells. But at around 6 months he stopped putting on any weight, just grew taller, longer and stronger. He is now a skinny (but muscular - has the beginnings of a six pack)) almost 6 year old.
