Infant feeding

No let down feeling or leaking

While i have considerable nipple pain while feeding and at latch on, I don't ever 'feel' the let down, or leak at all.

Just looking for reassurance that this isn't unusual, and doesn't mean I'm not producing milk properly...

islandbaby some more info please as I'm new to this site.
How old is your baby? Have you ever felt the let-down? What's the weight gain like with your baby and if she's a wee one, are there plenty wet nappies? What colour are her dirty nappies?
First baby? Breastfed before? Anyone checked your latch?
Withough knowing the vital info I won't be able to offer exact advice but to start, it's also perfectly natural for some women to not leak....
Sorry about so many questions, but it's a need know basis!

How long are you feeding? I only started noticing letdown after the 6 week growth spurt - I can really feel it now though. I tend to only leak maybe in the morning when my boobs are full. My DD is thriving and has gone from 7lbs to 12lbs5ozs in 8 wks. I'd say as long as your LO is putting on weight you are fine, but i'll be very interested in other responses!!

I didn't notice the letdown for the first few weeks - then after a month or so it was really painful, but I stopped feeling it again after about 4 months. A friend of mine never felt it at all.

Have you had any help for the nipple pain?

I never felt the let down, and I only leaked if dd hadn't woken for a longer stretch than usual.I also had a lot of pain, partly due to a slight tongue tie in my baby. How old is yours? (should say I've been feeding first one baby and then the next for six solid years now so clearly my breasts were working properly!)

I didn't feel any let-down or experience any leaking till bf was well established; 6-8 weeks I think. Never got engorged either. No problems with milk production here - dd now 7.5 months and a chubby little thing.

Thanks for the responses. DS is 4 and a bit weeks, and seems to be a fairly efficient feeder. He'll usually 'finish' each boob in 10 minutes or so. He was only 6lbs 14oz at birth, lost a few ounces but is now 8lbs 2oz, with plenty of happy nappies.

The nipple pain is being monitored and I'm waiting for a appt with the tongue tie doc to confirm what the BF support lady thinks is a slight tt. I really hope that is the prob because we're lost for other reasons for the pain at the oment.

My dds tongue tie was only slight and I was advised that it would resolve itself gradually, which is just what happened, over the weeks it hurt less and less to feed until I suddenly realised it hadn't hurt at all for a while. No problems after that. With DD2,it was only sore for a day or two, but I'd fed DD1 through my whole pregnancy, she only stopped just before DD2 was born,so my breasts were still "in action" !!
And thanks udderly, yes, six years! never thought I would feed this long, but DD2 is three and really doesn't want to stop.(she said "I am not going to stop,I am going to have lovely Booa-her word for milk-every day until I die !!!!!).Actually I'm so used to feeding now that I barely register that I'm still doing it,as its just part of my daily routine.(she only feeds at bedtime and when she wakes up).

island I very rarely felt letdown with either of mine and had no leakage wit DC2. She still gained well though.

Well done for getting this far. Keep posting and let us know how you are getting on Smile
