scuse one-handed typing and briefness....

ok, 4 week old DS with reflux, on meds, posterior tongue tie, awaiting division on tue, now he is pulling off and struggling at breast even more than normal and i have tingly, shooting-type pains in my nipples between feeds (not during). not sore, no cracks despite DS poor latch. not too painful but definitely noticeable.

is it likely to be thrush?

Poor you. Haven't got any experience of thrush sorry but would suggest phoning one of the bfing lines to see if they know.

Hope it gets better soon and also hope the division goes well on Tuesday.

It could very well be thrush I'm afraid, BUT it could also be to do with his latch. I thought I had thrush (and I know it well from last time), but as the tingly pains haven't been after every feed and isn't as painful as last time, I have put it down to latch (DS2 has also had a tongue tie which we got snipped a week ago). However, I have taken all the meds for thrush, also probiotics, nipples in vinegar, etc, just to be on the safe side. Am still getting the odd tingle and my nipples are v sensitive in shower etc, but I think some people just have more sensitive nipples.

DS2 is also 4 weeks, it's such a struggle isn't it!

i had this for a while but it wasn't enough to really bother me.

i think if it is thrush it is shooting PAINS through the breast rather than tingles and nipples are really really sore to the touch. i remember thinking it was the milk being made Hmm (may well have been a bit post birth addled brain on that one lol) it went away after a while (not sure when, all a bit hazy).

can you go to a breastfeeding drop in . they will be able to advise i should think, and check the latch etc.

my ds was tt and it improved as i got better at latching him on properly and his mouth got bigger. had to express of a nasty cracked nipple for a week or so. it was mild tt. never snipped. all good now @ 14 months.

Thanks everyone - popped down to out of hours and got some cream for us both. Doc wasn't sure, said maybe wait and see whether it develops into anything....or I could treat and no harm done if it turns out not to be. I can't think straight at all. I don't know if I can manage to administer the stuff to both of us, deal with his reflux and his meds for those, and look after his big sister too, all on about 3 hours sleep a night. Feel like things are really falling apart today. But thanks for the help everyone.

Hi Narnada - if it's thrush the pain generally goes on in between feeds and is like glass/razor blades through the breast tissue. I've had it and it's painful . If it is ductal thrush cream is just not going to cut it - you need oral anti-fungals.

Have a look here to see the best advice on thrush/nipple pain. Hopefully (?) it's just the tongue tie and when the division happens the pain will stop/get better.

Camper, in my case think it's actually not thrush after all. Sorry you're struggling tho. Hope you get some effective treatment.
