David Nicholls has an exceptional talent for observational comedy, and it is present on every page of his Booker Prize long-listed new novel, US. Just like his previous novels Starter for Ten and the phenomenally successful One Day, US is brilliantly detailed and beautifully structured. After 21 years, Douglas and Connie are at the end of their marriage. It was always an unlikely match: the biochemist with his Billy Joel records and the East End-dwelling artist. They embark on a European Grand Tour along with their teenage son Albie, in a last ditch attempt to be together as a family. As they criss-cross from Paris to Amsterdam, Munich to Venice, Douglas desperately hopes to win back the love of his wife and the respect of his son, whilst ruminating on art, science and the years gone by.

You can find out more on our book of the month page, where you can also apply for a signed free copy.

So looking forward to reading this - I loved all his previous ones, and the review in The Independent was just incredible. (A faultless novel? Pretty wow!)

Thanks Mumsnet HQ - I just received my signed copy of Us. Perfect timing as I'd just run out of books to read (having said that, I've at least 3000 books on my shelves, but you know what it's like, I still couldn't find anything I fancied reading!)

Hi
thanks for the copy.
Unfortunately after dragging myself to a (very heavy) page 156 ( oh for a kindle version!) I gave up, I found the premise of the holiday unlikely and the characters dull.

Do you not think the idea of going on a trip when you've deCided to divorce is unlikely? Does the man not strike you as dull and wimpy?

KiaOraOAotearoa · 14/10/2014 06:20

Good point betty, but he did ask whether they should cancel, Connie insisted they still go.
I keep thinking:he's trying to save his marriage but still laminates the sodding routes. He's making such an 'effort' to enjoy the museums and art galleries, his comments are so funny, but he really doesn't get it, does he?
