My daughter asks me why other kids are allowed to eat junk food even though it is very bad for you. This is often in front of other children and parents at parties or family gatherings.

I'm often stuck for words and somehow brush it under the table.

She is 6 years old and has an intolorance to refined sugar and refined carbs, whenever she eats these types of foods she starts to itch sometimes has constipation and diarrhoea, she also itches in her sleep so much that she can draw blood. As you can imagine as a parent this is very hard.

Would I be wrong in telling her that she should go ask the parents of the children why they are allowing there children to eat rubbish ?

Of course you would be wrong to do that. You should maybe just tell your daughter that everyone is different but in your house you don’t eat that sort of food. Please don’t bring up your daughter to look down on other people, or question what other parents do with their children. This will make her very unpopular

HI, thanks for the response, i have told her this but she does not understand why there parents would allow there children to eat bad things and I'm not sure how to answer this, thats why i thought she might as well ask the parents direct.

You tell her that certain types of food make her ill as she is allergic to them.

In the same way you would if she was allergic to eggs/nuts, etc.

Yes I think this is the crucial part - she is intolerant, other children are not. Therefore other children can have the junk food as a treat as it doesn’t make them ill like it does her.

Eh?!

Yes, it would be wrong to expect other parents to explain to your DD why you do not let her eat that kind of food.

I'm confused by the fact that your daughter is both intolerant of the food, and you are also judgemental of parents who allow their children (who, presumably are not intolerant) to eat the food. Are you judgemental because she's intolerant and you wish to make it easier for her somehow?! This is very confusing.

erm, because they aren't bad things per se - they are unhealthy in excess and they are unhealthy for her because they cause a reaction, but there's no need to label them all as bad and dole out the righteous indignation!

Im really new to mumsnet, this being the first ever comment they have put. My son prefers packed lunches i always feel like im being judged for what i put in his lunchbox, usually tuna pasta or sandwich (always plain) crisps and a chocolate bar. I cook home cooked food from scratch everynight and give my son a good breakfast and healthy supper. What im trying to say is that i worry of what people think i give him, but thats what he likes. You're being that person who judges what other people give their* children "rubbish" basically you dont see what they eat the rest of the time. All children can eat sweets, chocolate, crisps (yes they are bad) but anything is fine with a balance.
