Can anyone give me feedback??(8 Posts)
I'm a fairly new blogger (2 months next week) and i would be grateful if anyone had time to have a quick look and tell me what you think - good or bad as long as its constructive.
It's a writing blog so i'd appreciate any ideas on making more interesting as well as any opions on my writing. I started it as a creative outlet and have been really surprised by how much i've enjoyed writing and the number of people that actually read it!
I'll sit and wait nervously for any replies!
Firstly, I really like the title of your blog. It describes what lies within beautifully - (which is something I didn't manage with my own!)
I think you're a very intelligent writer - I most liked and commented on the piece about pregnant women not rejecting the foetus (sp?) as you explained something complicated in accessible language. I would like more of this kind of thing.
So many 'creative' types aren't great on 'science' and so many 'scientists' can't write very creatively, so to have a talent in both is really special.
Thanks Thisisaeuphemism that really helps and gives me an idea for my next post - will write it tonight/tomorrow
There is a lot of text. From a publishing point of view, you could make it easier to read just as you would in a printed book. Add headings to break up long chunks of text. Add images that illustrate or, better, help to explain what you are discussing. Add links to provide background rather than pouring it all into the post. Shorten your sentences for online reading.
I like blogs that have a short piece of 'about' text on the homepage, as they give an immediate sense of what to expect. I used a widget in Wordpress to do this on [[http://isabelthomas.wordpress.com/ my homepage].
Crucially though it's very interesting subject matter stands out from the common or garden blog. It could just be a bit easier on the restless, media-saturated eye!
I really enjoyed the pregnancy post and would love to read more along those lines. I like that you take complex concepts and explain them in a very clear and concise way.
I agree with Wrestling that you need a section explaining who you are, and that a few photos would add interest.
Are you on Twitter or FB? I am not signing up to any new blogs, as I already follow so many already but would like to read your blog regularly.
I spent this evening tinkering a bit and i now have an 'about' page, have catergorized my blogs to make it easier for anyone who is only interested in one topic and i've added a link to my twitter page
I will have a think about the photo's because i'm not sure that most of what i write goes with pictures. I have added one of my ugly mug in the meantime though
Thank you very much for the helpful suggestions
I think it looks great Lolil. It is easier to read. Nice 'about' page. I look forward to seeing more. That was great advice from wrestling alligators.
I've just taken her advice too and finally, very cautiously, changed themes. Hopefully it makes for a more pleasant (and seasonal!) read - grandadcametotea.wordpress.com/
Great changes. I like the new look.
You don't have to add pictures, but I do find that they liven a blog up a bit, and break up the text. You can find great free pics on Flickr such as these on the topic of universities or job centre for your post on being on benefits.
Be sure to use advance search to look for pictures that are free to use under the Creative Commons Licence, and to link back to the Flickr page or website of the photographer.
