Link parties....do they boost your readers?

Hi everyone!,

I blog about toddler activities, arts and crafts and run a Cultural Exchange for families (like being a pen pal but sending a package instead of a letter). Here's my blog.
Anyway, I have been doing a bit of an experiment recently looking at how useful link parties are and I have noticed that there are some really good ones and some really bad ones but there are a few general principles that I follow and I thought I would share them in case you are interested.

Firstly though in case you don't know what a link party is here is an example (you have to scroll down to the bottom to see the link up). So you link up your posts to a list somewhere and then readers go to that list see your interesting post amongst others and decide to click on it and investigate your blog further.

Here are the things that I have learned:

  1. links up without pictures or ones with tiny picture thumbnails are a waste of time as they are so annoying for the reader.
  2. Just because a link up has 400 links it doesn't mean you will get a lot of visits. It's so important to only link up to ones that really are relevant to your target audience.
  3. Don't be a link party spammer. I have seen some people who link up the same post to maybe 100 link parties each week. This is not only a lot of effort for you but gives the appearance that you care more about the number of visitors than the quality of your blog posts.
  4. Check your statistics closely to find out which link ups are getting the most traffic to your site and concentrate on those.
  5. Always only link up posts with attractive pictures so that you can draw in potential visitors.

I hope that this is interesting / useful and I would love to hear your experiences of link parties.
