Has anyone had a scan at 6 weeks to find egg sac only measured 4 weeks? I went in Friday to have an early scan (5+6). I also had my blood count done which had nearly doubled from Weds (3910 to 6989). But I feel so confused. How can my dates be that out? Prior to conception my periods had been bang on 26 days for the last 6 months. Has anyone else had such a small sac measurement but gone on to have a normal pregnancy? They won't scan me again until the 3rd of Dec. I think I'll go mad!!!

hi planetjules.. big breath.. this happened to me earlier this year - at 6 week scan i measured only 4 wks which threw me for six... i went on to be scanned a few more times over the months and at 9 wks only measured5 or 6.. it wasn't viable.. the sac was growing but no baby..

i hope this doesn't happen with you, but you may need to be prepared xx

Hi divedaisy

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply - I really do appreciate it I'm so sorry to hear of your loss earlier this year, it must have been an agonizing wait for you, because you always keep faith and hope for the best instinctively. I hope things have improved for you and you have more positive things on the horizon.

Thank you also for you candour. I have had 5 miscarriages over the past 6 years so I'm always filled with anticipation for the worst possible outcome. What has thrown me a bit with this one is that I am usually forwarned by failing blood counts, so I kind of get the picture that all is not well. However my bloods had doubled on the day I had the scan..? You didn't mention if yours were being monitored at the time and what was happening with them..?xx

Hello Planetjules. I had a similar experience as divedaisy. I was rescanned 2 weeks later. I was told that it may be that the dates were wrong, but after the 2nd scan, I was told that they were looking to see if the sac had reduced in size - which it had. The baby just didnt grow. I didn't have any bloods done. I was told that I may go on to have a spontaneous miscarriage, but was offered anatetic for a 'clean up' (I think it was referred to) or a tablet to induce a miscarriage. I opted to go under anastetic.

Its really difficult waiting for the scans, big hugs to you and your partner.

Planetjules - this is a hard topic to reply to and I am pleased you have taken what I have said so well... so easily it could have upset you... anyway I did have bloods taken and they were on the up. I had an anembryonic pregnancy. Basically this is where the body thinks it's pregnant and in the first few weeks and months presents all the symptoms (sore boobs, MS, metalic taste in mouth etc etc) and the body also produces it's pregnancy hormones. However eventually the hormone levels begin to fall which would result in a MC. However, I suspect you are being monitored because of your past history. Anyway the sac grew, but there never was a foetal pole to develop into a baby. So at 9 weeks I was given 3 choices - to let nature take it's course over the coming weeks, to be given tablets to induce a MC, or to have a ERCP under anaesthetic. I chose the last option and it worked well for me.

I hope it is jsut a case of you're earlier than you thought. I wish you and your DP all the best. xx

Planetjules I went for an early scan at what the midwife thought was 7 weeks. When I went for my scan all they could see was an empty sac measuring 4-5 weeks. They took blood from me and my hormone levels did double within 48 hours. I went back after 1 week and a yolk sac developed but no featal pole. I went back in a further 2 weeks and there was a lovely wee bean with a heartbeat, and again went back last wednesday and I measured at 9+4 saw the baby stretch it's wee arms and legs it was amazing!
After only seeing an empty sac I was terrified I was miscarrying the week between scans were the longest, but it has worked out in the end and I hope it works out fine for you too...sending love and hugs x

Thank you all for your kind wishes and replies. So sorry for both you divedaisy and magicwashingpot, it is always so hard. The body plays wicked tricks with your mind and it's hard to know what to believe. That was a lovely outcome for you Flynn - many congratulations! It is all such a lottery but I don't feel overly optimistic I must say. I 'm going in to see my consultant tomorrow morning. Not sure what he can add really; only my scan next week will shed light on the situation. I fully expect to see the sac empty again. Started to put the pregnancy out of my mind now - not thinking ahead with it anyway. Probably better that way. x

Hi,

I just wanted to say something about the measuring less than should be scan, this happened to be but i am now wrestling a lively DD for playdoh!!

I was 6 +4 weeks and had a bleed so was sent for a scan, they couldn't see anything so had to have the internal one, they then saw an egg sac and on closer inspection a very tiny heartbeat, she said they were sure i was only 4 - 5 weeks maximum! which would actually have worked out that we conceived AFTER we found out we were pg! so no sense there.

I had to have the bloods done then 2 days later more bloods, which were rising, then i had another scan at 11 weeks and was told i could now go back to my original dates as i was exactly spot on! weird.

all was totally fine and in fact she cam 2 weeks late so either could of been right! but at least there are positive stories out there to encourage you xxx
